I asked my mum what she’d like for her birthday.
“I wanna Dyson.” She said excitedly.
So that night, I smothered her face with a pillow.....

Here's a blast from the past. Who remembers Arjun's Miles Jazz Bar when it was a rooftop near Psar BKK. Those were the fuckin days. We ended up living 100m from his next bar in toul sleng before he died poor bugger.

I remember that bar on 310/113, it was the only bar in miles at the time.

I remember hearing of it but don't think I ever made it there. I vaguely recall there being some interesting story around his demise...

It was mainly remarkable in that there was nothing else around there at the time, 310 was just dark at night and not too many foreigners lived around Tuol Sleng or even Tuol Tom Pong at the time. I went through TTP this evening and it's packed with bloody foreigners.

No, just "The Rock", but last time I was there was 2006. It was the most over-the-top nightclub I'd seen since the Cage in Lusaka a few years before and the fabulous "Manhattan" here a few years before that. Manhattan looked like an 80s disco nightmare- all chrome walkways and spinning lights etc. All fucking awful really but you have to check out what's going on....

I used to go to that dreadful nightclub just North of Wat Phnom, in the basement of some hotel on the West side of the road - Casa something ?
A truly awful place it was too back in '03/'04 all sofas and coffee tables and bottles of whiskey upon then. Horrendously drunk armed cops and military personnel, surrounded by drugged out hookers and terrified waiters.
Still, it was open until about 6AM, was relatively cheap, entertaining and only occasionally life threatening.

Not the same. Hard Rock was opened on the riverfront in ‘92 I think, and by all accounts things got a little crazy in there - like ride your motorcycle up to the bar crazy. Lasted about a year but the UN kindly requested it to close as it was causing too many issues for their Western staff...

Way before my time and never heard of it.

Manhattan was a nice change from backpacker packed HoD at the time as there wasn't much else at night.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2019 11:31 pmNo, just "The Rock", but last time I was there was 2006. I'm guessing no one really has, as Felger was probably the only one of us that was here that early (1992). For all the "1.0s" here, they should remember that there were plenty of people here before them...
It reminds me a bit of the movie Midnight in Paris, where Owen Wilson romanticized the '20s, but then the characters alive in the '20s romanticized 100 years before, and etc, etc. People will always romanticize and glorify the past - you guys that have been here for 15 years miss the early days, but at that time there were those that had come before you and missed the earlier days, etc etc.

However, with Phnom Penh, your Midnight in Paris analogy breaks down quickly once you get a few more years back - not many people look back on the 70s and 80s in Cambodia with those rose tinted glasses.
