pictures of Phnom Penh canals??
I've read that Phnom Penh used to have several canals (the Venice of the East). All were filled in at some point. Are there any surviving pictures of the canals?
I've not heard Phnom Penh described as the 'Venice of the East', but more the 'City of Water'
The canals were mostly drainage for the lake and not so much a picturesque feature in themselves, but the 2 bridges built on the ends of the canals were, if only short-lived, quite something in the architectural sense. Unfortunately they were demolished after only 30 years.
Verneville and Fabre Bridges were situated at the end (Pont Verneville)of what was Verneville Canal, now the area between St 108 and St 106, and the end(Pont Faber) of what was Faber Canal, now St 70, at Chroy Changvar. The Monivong canal also ran along what is now Monivong Blvd, and hence the Faux Naga Bridge. Edit: thanks Raendi, I got a bit muddled there. Faux Naga Bridge on Norodom, not Monivong.
These 3 canals essentially defined the boundary of the European Quarter.

Great pics kinard any reason for their short life? Sure looks pretty K R?
Built late 1890s and demolished in 1930, the canals were filled in around the early 1920s so I guess the bridges no longer had a purpose.Jack Frost wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2019 8:22 pmGreat pics kinard any reason for their short life? Sure looks pretty K R?
These pics can be found in a few threads on here, I recall Hanky had compiled a lot. Was trying to find a link for that in between watching the cricket.

This is labelled Vernille (sic) Canal but I think it's Fabre.:
One of the administrative buildings along Verneville Canal:
Not a canal, but the pond that was once in front of Wat Botum:
A plan from 1903 showing some of the canals and lakes and that pond in front of Wat Botum:
And the view towards the train station of the former canal in 1992, just to show that it wasn't always lawns and flowerbeds (or fenced off areas):
The same place in 1946:
And in 1960:
