Driving lessons for the wife.
Driving lessons for the wife.
I would like to have the wife learn how to drive a car, any suggestions on costs per lesson and who to use. Wife lives out of PP in Russey Keo, The local driving school wants $140 all up for lessons and exam, claims unlimited driving lessons until she can pass exam. Seems rather inexpensive. But not to confident on quality of teaching.
Suggestions appreciated.

I taught my missus to drive a manual landcruiser on koh pich when it was still just a work site with some concrete access roads.

My Missus went to driving school in Temple Town. She took the option of actually taking the classes, unlike most of the other people that registered and paid about the same amount. I was impressed with the quality and extent of the teaching as I did not expect that. And actually used a manual car, which I think is much better.

I don't own a car in Cambodia, so cannot do as suggested, I will do most of the teaching when she moves to Oz, but want her to get her license whilst still in Cambodia.

perhaps there's someone who has a LOT of spare time on their hands who might be looking for something to do for a bit of cash or just to help out.

$100 or thereabouts is about right from memory; wife did hers about 12 years ago for that, inflation, etc.
Agree with ricecakes though, even once she breezes through the Cambodian bullshit license, you better get her lessons in Australia also if she's going to live & drive there. The thought of a Cambodian driving abroad based purely on their Khmer license & training just sends chills down the spine.

true, but I assume that if she gets it in Cambodia first all she needs to do is trade it in for the Aussie one - is that right? This would be far easier (although not safer) if she can't read English and wouldn't deal well with the specific nerves of a test in a foreign country. I completely agree that lessons IN Australia BEFORE driving would be the priority before actually driving.Spigzy wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2019 12:50 pm$100 or thereabouts is about right from memory; wife did hers about 12 years ago for that, inflation, etc.

Very unlikely (though I'm not Australian so I'm not 100% sure). My neighbor took his lady back to Europe. They tried to trade in her Cambodian license for a Dutch one. Apparently she first needed to learn Dutch and/ or English, and then she needed to take classes to understand how to follow basic traffic rules. Apparently, it's a process.violet wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2019 12:53 pmtrue, but I assume that if she gets it in Cambodia first all she needs to do is trade it in for the Aussie one - is that right? For the OP, don't waste your time with the local DL. It is not worth anything (for obvious reasons). Teach her how to drive stick in Cambodia, take some free tests online so she can get familiar with the process, and tell her to brace herself for some mind-boggling concepts, like right-of-way rules or going northbound in the northbound lane (and not the southbound one).
Lessons in Oz are an absolute must do. However getting her started in Cambodia with someone she can talk fluently with will be to her advantage.

When I got my license in OZ, I never did any lessons, just took the test on a Sunday, when I was informed the Inspector may or may not show up. After my 3 point parking, he wasn't worried. Scoffer, just do it yourself, like someone else said. You don't need to speak, just show her. Don't ban me.

I realised after posting that drivers need to be able to read road signs (especially ones in non-standard situations).
Maybe it would be more comfortable for her to get a motorbike licence (for a scooter).

Yes ^ Do that Scoffer, my wife learnt in Cambo. , funny first thing she said was the cars in NZ and steering wheel is on the wrong side and you dirve on the wrong side of the road when she arrived in NZ, that was a little issue (luckly no head on's ),
Depends on the territory in Oz. Some you can convert others you have to start fresh.
I did my big truck licence (semi) in Oz. Five lessons (over two months) 30 min test and then off to the pub with staff and people who passed.
That was 20 years ago mind. They must have tightened up procedures now.
