discs vs drums
Age-old topic.
But my immaculate Honda future instantly locks up its front brake and i crash.
I complain about my mate's old un-tuned drum brake - he says. most crashes happen as assholes lock the front wheel like me (I was in a dire situation on sandy roads). His brake works about worse then a rear brake 15%, barely perceptible.
I think he has a point and i might have a shoulder if id had a drum brake.
whaytyya reckon?

I see a lot of Dreams with the front drum brake cable detached.Along with the speedometer cable.Which is illegal. If you don't have lots of experience with front brakes your better off with drum brakes. Some of the automatic bikes have combo brakes where the rear gets about 80% and the front disk around 20%.Works great on a dry hard surface road but sucks off road.Off road I cover the front brake lever with one finger and use two fingers on pavement.

'which is illegal'...yeah, good luck expecting anyone ever to enforce that
Don't most bikes now have ABS?
Hate drums, not a good idea in dusty countries

I agree, drums suck in dusty conditions. They start squealing every time you touch the brakes. Not many small bikes have ABS here in Cambodia. Most people don't want to pay extra for it.And it would be hard to find someone to work on them.Great on road, suck off road.
Depends on your skill level. Disc brakes are much more efficient and effective than drum.
Instead of locking up you’ll just slam into the car/Moto.
My old Cub scared me after riding a disc bike. Sold the thing as it was a liability.
It’s like saying should I have bald tyres in the summer as they have better grip in the dry!

I'm not a fan of drum brakes, had a drumbrake on a moped that made a mark on the drum-surface so bad that if you used it, it latched on untill you pulled back the bike a bit, (so brake to full stop, push the bike back 20cm, and continue on my way, until the next time i used that brake)
Also had a drum brake on a (peugeot 206) car seize while reversing off the driveway, the liner of the brake shoe came loose, and seized up the wheel, only when i borrowed a giant pulley puller the brakedrum came loose.
Never had much issues with disc-brakes, much easier access anyway.

Maybe he thinks it should be “breaks” which is what idiots do to their collar bones when pissed.

DIscs in the city, drums are good with a foot brake, especially on dirt roads during the rainy season out on the countryside. Discs tend to lock up or not work at all if wet and overheated, the drum is more isolated and stable in those conditions. ie. 4 people on a Honda Dream going to the market on weekends etc. Also drums are cheaper and easier to repair yourself with a limited toolshed.

Absolutely, if going down a shite dirt road with the fam.'
But I bet you've never ever tried that.
But I bet you've never ever tried that.
He's just trolling, nobody in their right mind would spout such rubbish.
Plenty of information on the web refuting his assertions and extolling the virtue of disc brakes. However here's my personal experience, for entertainment value.
Disc brakes don't lock up, but drums do if the spindle actuating the shoes is not maintained and gets rusty, the lever is strong enough to apply the brake but the shoe springs are not strong enough to release them, and the brake locks.
Drums when water logged cease working until you dry them by applying the brake. Discs don't have that problem and don't fade unless used in excessive braking during competition.
I have never had discs fail and I have driven a Honda CBR here for many years with front and rear discs, used in all conditions with no problems. Now I use a Jupiter front disc and rear drum. And disc pads are a lot easier to replace than shoes.
When I lived in Southern Africa I had a DR600 which I did a lot of off road riding on. Never a problem with discs in seven years of hard use.
With respect to vehicles I had a Toyota Hilux both here and in Africa. Lots of off roading and no problems with discs. When I was younger I used to rally a mini cooper s, again with discs that never failed.
I must admit its a good troll as I couldn't resist responding to such ill informed garbage.
Well done newnewnewbie

Not true, muddy shite roads and wet gravel makes discs fail long term if you regularly ride with heavy loads. 100 kg. rice or a family of four and all that. It's not a performance race out there.
