Jep those are things that quiet the masses.

I have thought about this a lot (in recent years from the internet perspective). I have considered my stance in various scenarios. I have mellowed in some areas.
I embrace the wonders of what emerging technologies can mean for us. I equally am very cautious about the path we are actually on.
Like everything, intentions and motivations matter most.
We, as a population, are being pushed forward by government and big business mostly, and from a motivation of fear (in general) and money making opportunity (with the message for the public that it is about personal safety, secure borders and convenient personalised shopping and lifestyle).
The argument about safety and security interests me most right now.
Surveillance in all its current and emerging forms is about safety. But it’s actually a bandaid and not a preventative measure. What is needed, is to look at what causes the level of crime and the types of crimes and make changes .... mostly about alleviating feelings of dissatisfaction and unequal power balances. Removing huge business profits for example. However, to seek solution in prevention means those in power 1. Being able to look at the cold hard truth and/or 2. Care about the cold hard truth and relinquish some of their power. They aren’t going to do that. So the problem is always .... out there .... in need of controlling measures. It’s never to do with them. So, instead of making changes in societal and financial imbalances and instead of taking a good look at where the current path leads and doing the hard long term changes, they create more imbalance of power by introducing life changing control measures.
I may be focused on this narrow view at the moment without exploring the positive outcomes. I know there are positive outcomes- many. But they don’t negate the growing disparity of power I think we are striding toward.
