I know there has been a lot of comments about tipping in restaurants, but what about the guy wsho watches your moto?
I have been usually giving them 500rl , esp when they wheel out my moto from a tight spot.
On one hand I feel that I am being incredibly cheap - 500rl = 13 cents!
On the other hand something is better than nothing.
BUt on the other hand these guys give me a bit of a sense of security and comfort knowing that someone is watching my machine. isn't that worth more than 13 cents?
But on the other hand, if everyone sliped them 500 rl, it wold add up to a fair little sum.
But on the other hand, if I gave maybe 1000 0r 2000 rl every time I parked my bike, on some days it would add up to more than I am paying to rent the bike.
But on the other hand . . .
Well, you can see that unless I am an octopus, have long run out of hands and this is where I covet your learned and combined wisdom.
What do you think?

More and more places are cutting costs by dispensing with bike security guards these days and this worries me because it's a false economy. It's pretty crappy when you are trying to eat or drink and still have to keep one eye on your wheels just in case.
I always give the guard outside the Freebird 1000 riel because I like to relax and not have to worry about my bike's safety when I'm having brunch. Added to that, he always greets me politely when I arrive and wheels my bike out on the street when I leave.

Ticketed moto/bicycle parking around the markets = 500r
Car parking around central market = 1000r
Private security outside anywhere = 1000r (car, personal choice) , apart from the goon at the post office, who lets all the locals park for free, then drags out some crinkled, grubby, old remnant of a ticket for me and tries it on for 2000 or 3000r for a 2 minute stop- he gets an earful, and doesn't learn.

Ya, he is a good kid. He always walks Missy to her car and makes sure I have a ride with one of their trusted tuk tuk guys if I tie one one with Dunk.keeping_it_riel wrote:More and more places are cutting costs by dispensing with bike security guards these days and this worries me because it's a false economy. I always give a dollar. If i can afford to pay 5-8 dollars for a meal I can afford to tip waitresses 1 dollar and the person that watches my moto one dollar.
If I knew for certain that a person was coming to my house with the intent of doing me good, I would run for my life HDT

1,000 riel is what i always give when i park the car and someone helps me pull in and out,
As to tipng in rets. Many europeans do not tip so why would they here in Cambodia?
BUT if they were americans .... I worked as a waiter and if anyone ever left less than 15% (we are talking high class rests not Burger king) I would return it politly and tell them they needed it more than me. Usually resulted in a larger tip.

I tip 500 riel when parking a moto, and when I have been in a car with Cambodians they always gave 1000 riel.
I once had a waitress do what Phuket2006 said, and I simply said "Thank you" and kept the tip. The reason I had only left 10% was because the service was not very good. I would have let it go at that until her smartass behavior, but because of that I returned the next day and complained to the manager. I also once fired a waitress in a bar I managed for a similar incident.

i'd observed what my cambo relatives did when eating out in pp. he rarely tipped the waiter/waitress, only on his good mood days. the one he liked he would gave whatever changes he got back, normally i saw between 10,000 riels to around $10. if we went to the province, he would call the wait staff and give them 10,000 riels each or $20 for them to split among themselves. but, what got me, he always gave about 1,000 to 2,000 riels to the do-nothing guards, the ones who standing around like zombies.
one thing i liked eating out in cambo that there is no demand or expectation for tips from the wait staff. it really got me when eat out in some pretentious asian and other ethnic and even americano restaurants in america where they put 15% gratitution charges on the bill and expect you to pay tips too! when i see the included gratitution on my bill, i pay with cash and leave zero tips!
what y'all should learn is to copy the japanese way of costumer service. i checked in keo plaza hotel in downtown tokyo with my work stuff and thought i would tip the bellboy handsomely because i was tired to help him carry those lagguages. after he put my stuff inside my room i handed him 2,000 yens then he said "we don't accept tips in japan". shocked i was!

good service - good tip, poor service - little tip, bad service - no tip
I try tipping the kitchen staff when ever possible. The people that make the food are often over looked. Good cooks make a difference.
It is not the money it is the show of appreciation. There is such a thing as fair play. I don't look to others as what I should tip but make my own judgment based upon the economy and needs of the people.

tipping should be based on service.
If you had a great meal and your waiter was on top of things, filing ur water glass, asking of all was ok, then 15% is what should be. 10% if everything is good but no outstanding service. Bad service or orders wrong..O
Outside of that. I dont know about here but wait staff in the states makes less salary than the kitchen staff because it is assumed they will make tips. Usually only the tip included will be imposed oin parties of 6 or more.
If you wantt to show off or impress everyone then of course tip everyone but i seriously doubt anyone would expect it but for sure they would appreicate it.

For a moto, 500 riel to 2000 riel depending on whether the guy seems cool or not. For a car, it depends on what you're driving. When I used to cruise around in my late 80's bashed up 4x4, I paid around 2000 to 4000 riel, and the parking guys were happy with it. Some Khmers seem to think my current car is a lamborghini or something (I regularly hear them saying they think it's worth $100k+ - even though it's a friking toyota), and the guards look noticeably disappointed when I give them 5000 riel (like they were expecting a $100 note or something). Having said that, they also take care of it as if it were a lamborghini, so I guess it's worth the extra thousand riel.
And like everyone else, I agree that they guy at freebird is great and fully deserving of our tips.
