Phnom Penh: The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia’s international half marathon that was held in Phnom Penh last Sunday was attended by thousands of participants from various schools, companies and institutions, both national and international. Among those participating were more than a hundred employees from BBQ Chicken, The Pizza Company and Swensen’s, franchises belonging to the multi fast food conglomerate, EFG (Express Food Group).
Dressed in running gear and raring to go, all the competitors were gathered in front of the royal palace before being sent off the mark at 6 am. Apart from the main race itself, an exclusive competition had been set up for those mounted on wheelchairs. The athletes were cheered on by their various companies and co-workers in the midst of a musical fanfare.
EFG got involved in the half marathon as a means of supporting and developing athletics in Cambodia in order to make sports as much a cultural phenomenom here as it is in western nations; directing youth away from drug use and engaging their free time enjoying sports activities, as a means of maintaining health, and as a way of unwinding after the stresses of the day.
EFG, the parent company for the famous international food franchises BBQ Chicken, The Pizza Company and Swensen’s, is often to be found actively taking part in organized charity events. In the past EFG has thrown its support behind the orphaned and indigent children’s NGO, Tiny Toones, and has participated in other charitable undertakings at various international school and university venues such as: CIAPP International School’s ‘Quiz Night,’ for the construction of housing for the poor; a charity concert at Cambodian Mekong University, for raising funds for impoverished children at elementary schools throughout Kampong Thom and Siem Reap Provinces; The University of Cambodia’s charity concert that welcomed in the New Year and raised donations for the orphaned children of Kampong Speu, etc. etc.
