Independence Day Celebration @ Himawari Hotel in Phnom Penh

This is a free speech zone where you can discuss and debate everything Cambodia related whether you're a dyed in the wool leftist, a liberal or somewhere to right of Attila the Hun. This is also where you get to read the news the local media suppresses.

Independence Day Celebration @ Himawari Hotel in Phnom Penh

- Saturday, June 30th from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Held at the Himawari Hotel Apartments, 313 Sisowath Quay, Tel: +855-23-214-555.
- Tickets are available for sale at Monument Books, Freebird, Gloria Jeans, Cambodia Investment Management, and Mike's Burger.
- Tickets are $5.00 USD for adults, $3.00 USD for children between the ages of 5 and 14, and are free for children under the age of 5.
- Tickets are nonrefundable.
- The event will proceed in the event of rain as the Himawari has indoor facilities.

I got this via an email from the US Embassy, Phnom Penh. What do you get for $5.00? This company is an insurance company. Is the US Embassy soliciting business? Does this bother any other US citizens? Is the US Embassy hosting anything, maybe on the 4th of July?

As I understand it, it's an AmCham Cambodia thing. Nothing to do with the embassy as Mrs. Bill Clinton will be in town. So the embassy party is off.
Couple of strange details though. A 4th of July Party in June.... for 3 1/2 hours (?) and you have to have your passport to buy tickets and attend. Kingdom of Wonder how much the Kingdom only beer costs.

The Julian calendar has been replaced by a Khmer calendar, as the moniker 'Julian' might evoke Julian Assange, that dirty rat who exposed the truth and practised free speech. Bloody communist!

Speaking of monikers, is Monica invited, they say regardless of weather, so even if there is a strong blow...

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist it. :-D

I always go to the July 4th embassy party when I'm in town for it. Especially nice family affair. Good food. Fun time. Though not quite as good as the old days when it was free and they had fireworks. Sorry I have to miss it this year.

If it is like previous years after it became a pay event there will be a bit of family entertainment and a Marine color guard doing its thing, plus booths selling food.

Photos of (pay) 4th of July party a couple of years ago at the embassy:

Of course it's bothersome that they promote some businesses and not others. Someone should write the Ambassador about this. How do I get the U.S. citizen services to promote our "adults-only" Sizzlers June 30 and July 4 afterparty?

BTW, i heard that they're having a party for 200 people at Sofitel on July 4. Anyone on the invitation list? :pissed:

Exactly what I was trying to get at in an earlier thread. You pay for the ticket so you can eat Mike's burger (and pay for it), Dan's Meats (and pay for it), Fatboy (and pay for it), etc, listen to a filipino band that you'd hear in a hotel without any cover charge, and meet people you probably had no interest to meet in the first place... .and have a lot of curious cambodians that paid the entry price and wondering what all the fuss is about.... :axe:

Ah, my good friend 1894. Bar remains under the same ownership, kitchen remains completely unutilized, and not sure about your latest experience with the happy hour. As I mentioned, with regard to your preferred spirits, you're welcome to bring a bottle if you want. Otherwise the Gold Label and Patron await your patronage. Cheers :pissed:

You mean to say the $82 fee for extra passport pages isn't enough to cover the July 4th party expenses?

I presume you mean the Gregorian Calendar. The Julian was phased out around 100-200 years ago.
