Comme la maison restaurant

Intercontinental Hotel deli sells great bread, including some very nice dark German bread, 50% off after 6pm

Fresco/Wagonwheels also sell

Come to think of it, haven't seen Italian bread

Le Duo sell nice Italian breads in their deli. Sundried tomato and focaccia with rosemary are both lovely.

Are they still around? I went to their restaurant when I was in town at the beginning of August and it was gone, and is now Taqueria Corona. I liked their pizza.

They used to be in Toul Kork and also on St. 51
I'm not sure if they are still around
Come to think of it, I didn't see them the last time I went past St.51, but that may have been the beer

Cheap and best - 3A Bakery.
for R1000 the best fresh mini-baguette anywhere in town IMHO, especially when they've just baked a batch and they're still warm in the big basket. Roll up, roll up, those things sell like...well...hot bread!

They sell croissant (R2000) and pain-au-chocolat (R2000), which are certainly French bread, although by no means the best in town.
There's no Italian bread at that bakery that i know of, but the fresh mini-baguettes are French style - a world away from the French-inspired mini-baguettes you find in the market.

Yeah, but what I mean is that consistency-wise, you can't call it French (taste-wise too for that matter). That being said, I buy 95% of my bread there so I'm not dissing them but I have a feeling the OP would be disapointed. I think he's looking for something more European than a typical khmer air-bread. I suggest Cambodiana myself.

I would assume Paris and Rome are fairly decent.

I agree.
Proper French baguette should be crisp crusty on the outside and fluffy in the middle, perfect for fromage and for wiping up olive oil. The one they bake at Comme a la maison comes close i think. In this climate, you've really got to eat that bread straight away to enjoy it at its best.

So where can I get good Italian bread in Paris, and good French bread in Rome?
Dictated to a slave and sent by carrier pigeon.

Pain a l'ancienne is my favourite French baguette.

Or the very thin baguette stuffed with ripe Brie that I once purchased from the cafe at a French railway station.

Jeez, add a bottle of wine...
