Cambodia driver's license acceptable in other countries?

Here is the place to post any simple or complex questions you may have about any aspect of life in Cambodia and beyond without fear of being told 'That question has been asked 100 times before.'

Cambodia driver's license acceptable in other countries?

Postby panavision » Sat Dec 22, 2012 4:27 pm

I used to have an automobile drivers license when I lived in the west, but it expired long ago. Someone told me you can easily get one in Cambo. If I get one in Cambo and then move to another country, will the new country accept the Cambo license and let me change it for a local license without a road test? Or will they just assume that Cambo licenses are dodgy?

I remember how to drive, and am a good driver, but I sure don't want to have to start the whole process from scratch with a road test, written exam, etc.

The above link is a topic where the questions are answered. It was dicsussed just a couple of weeks ago.

A simple search of

cambodian + licence found it.

To answer the OP's question.

You need a foreign drivers licence to trade in for an annual Cambodian one.

Otherwise go to a driving school pass the written and practical tests and you get a 5 year one.

Pay the course fee, pay $5 for the instructor to do or pass your written test for you.

Pay about $20 to the man testing you and about the same to the instructor.

Mind you those were Snooky rates a few years ago and paid by a local, you may not get away with it in the city and you will probably have to pay more. I know a couple of barangs who have done the lessons and tests and passed no worries (driving standards in the Kingdom are not all that high - in case you had not noticce..

To answer Dad's question.

This is well and truly covered inthe other thread.

I have ridden or driven on my Cambodian licence in Thaliand, Laos, Malaysia and the USA. I have been stopped by the police a few times in Thailand showing them my Cambodian licence with no problems and no tea money paid.

In Vietnam, I have ridden also however legally everyone on the roads in Vietnam needs a Vietnamese licence, they do not in theory recognise a foreign licence.

I trust this helps you guys.

cheers

LaudJohn

PS: being nice about not using the search function and answering this question is part of my "be nice to morons"campaign.

Thank you very much for asking, very nice of you.

Ever since I started my "be nice to morons" campaign I have felt happy and enlightened.

So much so that I may just try extending this campaing to our clients at work.

If you have Cambodian licence and get somewhere int.driver permit you should get drive these countries who are in 1949 convention. Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internatio ... ntion_1949
I don't have any idea where to get int.driver permit in Kingdom?

Then what comes to new country about chancing Cambo to their license it's all about that country's policy.
Pardon my engrish, thanks you.
