Ultimately, it's entirely dependent on your risk profile. I've had no issues at all with ABA and recently transferred a six figure sum to them. I sleep fine at night. Others might not.

Except a question mark.Ryoon wrote:Everything is in the title.
Sorry for being a grammar nazi. I couldn't resist it.
My risk profile is that my current account is in Euro and there is a (very) high probability that this currency will go down very soon.scobienz wrote:Ultimately, it's entirely dependent on your risk profile. So open accounts in a different currency that you think will appreciate. Simple. My savings are spread around the world in five different currencies. Expats will always have to take forex into consideration; it's a fact of life. All you can do is take steps to mitigate the risk.Ryoon wrote:My risk profile is that my current account is in Euro and there is a (very) high probability that this currency will go down very soon.scobienz wrote:Ultimately, it's entirely dependent on your risk profile. I'm not sure what your concerns re the Euro have to do with the trustworthiness of local banks though.

You could always transfer your life savings into a Nigerian bank. I can recommend someone who can organise this for you. He is a prince.
Very simple, I do not want to have my main account in Euro hence I am looking for a bank abroad. Being in Cambodia opening an account in a Khmer banks seems the more simple and practical step.
I read on this forum some poster expressing distrust of Khmer bank so I wanted to have an opinion, that all

And the answer, as a say, depends on your attitudes to banking in general and your risk profile. Personally I have no worries at all. To me it is just plain common sense to have a local bank account and to have a least a chunk of your liquid savings close by. The advantages far outweigh any perception of risk.

There was a recent thread about problems with credit card liability and local banks.

This might give you some ideas about customer service and Khmer banks.

Scobienz, I value your comments. I bank with ABA and plain to bring in more cash (6 figures as well) to mitigate risk, who else would you bank with?

My employer pays my salary into an account I have with ANZ. I transfer most of it to ABA because I find them more customer friendly and I have all the right cards, credit cards, saving products with them. Based on the opinions of a couple if 440ers whose opinions I value I'm currently investigating bringing in some more overseas funds to invest in a couple of MFIs like Prasac to benefit from the high interest rates.
My savings are spread around the world in five different currencies
Six figure sums in 5 currencies.
Scobie you legend....
cue joke about my yardsales.....
