Re: Bringing Cash to Cambodia?
its been a long time since i flew into Cambodia
but arriving at a land border like poipet or koh kong, I'd say theres almost zero chance of being searched. and i dont remember there being anything to fill in on the arrival form regarding how much cash you are carrying

Can you give me your flight number? I'll arrange a safe pick up from the airport.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Good luck with that. I hope you're able to find some killer hiding spots in your room over here.hdhowie1 wrote:

You have to declare any amount over $10,000 and complete forms when leaving the USA anyway, so that will be a problem for you.
For the Philippines you can take theoretically in larger amounts, but you have to declare any amount over $10,000 when entering or leaving the country and complete forms, not so good considering the institutionalised corruption over there.
You are not allowed to carry over 10,000 Philippine Peso (currently 225 US$ worth) in or out of the Philippines without central bank approval.
For Cambodia?

It it not prohibited to bring more than 10,000 cash into Cambodia or out of the U.S. You simply are required to declare it. You have zero chance of being stopped at the airport in PP and questioned........I would not give it a second thought.
It is interesting that when you leave the U.S., there is no custom's checkpoint and at no time are you asked about leaving with money. You are supposed to seek out the customs office and fill out the form. Be forewarned that U.S. customs are now routinely performing "currency audits" of passengers boarding aircraft leaving the States. As you board the plane, they will ask if you are carrying more than 10k. I doubt they are likely to search you if you say no...............but, it is a felony to lie to them, and if they were to search you, they could confiscate your money.
The safest bet is probably to declare it on the way out.............and not say a word on the way in.

Copy of the slip of toilet paper you get in the plane when flying in.

How much you planning to bring?
If it's only a little over 10k, you can always bring $9999, and tell your mate to Western union the rest. I believe its up to $3000 per month Western union.

There's definitely a customs form to fill in when you arrive in Cambodia asking if you are carrying more than $10,000. Lonestar's advice is quite practical, but on the other hand, they must search SOME people at the airport, because there are reports of people being arrested with drugs entering the airport.
What type of place are you planning on staying in after you arrive where you would keep more than $10,000? There have been quite a few stories of dudes hiding their life savings in their guesthouse and it disappears with a hooker, I think I mentioned one of those stories here: http://www.khmer440.com/k/2011/07/shoul ... -cambodia/

I've been told that some of the banks in Oz/NZ now have international transfer facilities with a cost of $10 per transfer. I'm not sure of the upper limit, maybe $100,000. As far as US, not sure about the banks there. I mean if this is the real deal, its gotta put Western Union out of business. The good thing is I believe, it's virtually instant as well.
Is it possible in the US to legally have more than a certain small amount of money and never use a bank? I guess if you were paid in cash, or your legal business only accepted cash, then you could get cashiers checks to pay the taxman. (That would require walking into a bank, though maybe not having an account.). But how can you buy anything from Amazon without a credit card (which would certainly require a bank account)?
Why would you not want to use a bank, C9? In this day and age it's nonsense to think you can live a meaningful life using just cash.
Australian and NZ banks have had this service for years, and its so simple via internet banking as long as you have the receiving bank account details, SWIFT code and bank address. Never heard of a bank offering this service for only $10 per transaction though, it normally costs about $25, plus whatever the receiving bank charges. Takes me less than 5 minutes online to transfer funds from either my NZ or Oz accounts to one of my accounts in Cambodia, and the money is usually in my account within 24-36 hours. Much easier than WU. Both Acleda and Canadia Banks ring me when I receive an international transfer. What Your Name? wrote:I've been told that some of the banks in Oz/NZ now have international transfer facilities with a cost of $10 per transfer. I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
I was just asking that in response to the OP saying he wanted to move some cash across borders but not through a bank, because he doesn't like them. I harbor no such aversion to the modern banking system.scobienz wrote:Why would you not want to use a bank, C9? It's funny how over the years, I never ever saw anyone getting his luggages searched on arrival.
I've been arriving with loads of suitcases and boxes even cupboards, up to +100kg at a time on a trolley.
A few jokes with the customs boys while handling the card and on our way...
All the mules busted on arrival were already identified IMHO. On the other hand i never traveled with any Nigerians I guess...
