I'm going to have to send my passport back to UK for new one.
Will I be able to carry photocopies of my 12 month visa (when I get it) and my main photo page in the mean time for identity purposes?
Am I better waiting until I rent a house before sending passport back etc?
Cheers
Sending passport home (carrying photocopies okay?)
A copy of your passport and visa should be fine, unless you plan on getting into any serious trouble, or doing anything official. ..make sure you have spare copies stashed at your place of abode.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
The only carriers I found that would accept the responsibility of sending my passport were DHL... 11.571757,104.916941
Be warned - they will not accept a pre-sealed package / envelope and will want to check inside to see what's there.
They will then let you, and even help you, to seal it all up.
When it's all done, and you've used your carefully chosen and labelled packaging to seal up the arrangement that will carry your only real ID plus all of your bank details, written longhand, through unprotected postal channels... the little diamonds will tell you that you need to open the package again because company policy states that they need a photocopy of your passport for their records, and your own copy that you prepared for just such an eventuality just won't do - they'll want to make their own.
Ask before you/they seal it all up - "Do you need to photocopy my passport?"
I'd take a hi-res photo of the passport details page/pages and or scan the passport rather than photocopy it.

If you are applying for a new UK passport from Cambodia then I am pretty sure that you do not need to send your old passport back.finy wrote:I'm going to have to send my passport back to UK for new one.
From Thailand it works this way...
Visit Embassy with application form & copy of passport. They go through it all & take the cash. They send it to Liverpool & e-mail you when the new passport returns. You go to Embassy to pick it up.
You keep your old passport with you, not send it away with the application.
The only thing they say is that you should not use your old passport for International travel once you have applied for a new one..
That said, it is the 3rd. different method that they have used for obtaining new passports in the last 9 months..
Thanks guys!
Passport definitely needed, but glad to know photocopies will be enough. (I'll keep a stash of them in case I lose any)
Good to know about DHL, I was going to use something like them anyway.
Might just send the passport and supporting documents in separate envelopes. Was going to send them to my home address first anyway so someone can countersign my photos.

I sent my passport and papers back with Fedex for $27, tracked with interweb. 3 days to UK, leaving PP same day.
DHL were asking $95
I think if you show what your sending, you probably wont be asked for ID as you fill in the form copied to the Fedex carrier envelope with your details here. I wasn't asked for ID.

As suggested, scan /copy your passport & old visas for reference and wait for fuckin ages to get your new passport....
If your worried about bank details also being sent, print the payment form here and sign it, send the lot to family or trusted others in UK and get them to fill in your bank details and then send the lot by registered post to Passport Office, Liverpool.
Alternatively, they can pay for your passport also using the payment form.
Also, I'm sure if you are sending your old passport for reference with application form, you do not need to get photos counter signed.
I didn't anyway.
Email Passport Office after 7-10 days and request them to confirm receipt & time scale for your new passport.
This at least gets an ID of your passport in 'the system'.
