Gym etiquette in Cambodia
Do you have to wear running shoes when you go to gyms in Cambodia? I know everywhere is different, so I just mean in general.
I was at one gym where they said I had to buy running shoes so I did, but then I joined another gym and they weren't needed.
Then I moved again and my new gym doesn't need you to wear them.
I don't want to bring them with me if they're not needed, so would love to know what the general rule is.
I don't use cardio machines btw, just free weights and bodyweight stuff.

real men train bare foot, seen flip flops worn in the gyms here as well as plimsolls, trainers and those things with holes in "crocs" ?

Muscle Fitness on St. 95 & 386 is the best value gym in the city (roughly 50/50 Khmer/expat customer base), and its Khmer owners couldn't care less what you wear (or don't)***. Running shoes, flip flops, socks only with no shoes, bare feet, etc...it's all acceptable.
***Only exception is on the cardio machines, of course. Running shoes only on the treadmills.
As for Khmer-only gyms (sweat-box gyms with no a/c), there is ZERO dress code, period. No shirt needed, no shoes needed, etc. After five minutes into your workout and drenched in sweat you'll understand why.
Don't listen to posters giving you "western" gym etiquette as it simply doesn't apply here in most gyms in PP (the rip-off "The Place" being the glaring exception).

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out next year. I just remember getting quoted something ridiculous like $150/mo. a few years back.the_purple_turtle wrote:Sign up for a year at Khmer New Year and it's a great deal.

If we are talking the same place then USD 150.00/month sounds OK to me. Great equipment if I recall correctly.Christian Au wrote:Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out next year. Muscle Fitness is fully equipped, machines and free weights, and just $35/mo. Surprisingly, the Khmer gym on St. 63/200 ($1/visit) is fully equipped too, albeit you're working out in a virtual sauna.Hanno wrote:If we are talking the same place then USD 150.00/month sounds OK to me. I just prefer not paying an extra $115/mo. just to have a nice view while on a cardio machine.

Fair enough. I wish there was a decent gym here in Temple Town.Christian Au wrote:Muscle Fitness is fully equipped, machines and free weights, and just $35/mo. Great equipment, clean, air conditioned... For me the pool is worth the money alone. Best one in the city, and people actually swim in lane. The running machines are good quality too, with individual tv screens on. My only complaint is the speed doesn't change very quickly, making interval running difficult. After using sweaty gyms with shitty machines and dirty showers for years here, The Place makes training indoors an enjoyable experience.Hanno wrote:If we are talking the same place then USD 150.00/month sounds OK to me. If you sign up at KNY its about $700 for a year. Usually it's about $100 more, but if a member signs up a friend, the member gets $100 cash, so Christian Au, if you want to join I'll get you signed up and give you the $100 straight back.
I thought I posted a reply, but obviously not.
I'll bring my running shoes anyway because I've decided I might try to do some running.
I just need a few basic pieces of equipment, so I'm sure I'll find a gym with the stuff and a no shoe policy.
$150 per month for a gym is crazy. I hope they have AT LEAST 5 squat racks, a huge selection of bumper plates, and dumbbells that go to at least 60kg. For that money I'd want lots of kettlebells, gymnastic rings, and a happy ending after every session too lol

I don't bench these days, just use gymnastic rings and do pistols for legs, handstand pushups for shoulders etc.
I just want a back ext machine and a barbell to do glute ham raises on.
Sadly my PR is only 135kg because I give up bench years ago and focused on other stuff instead.
