Does Beer Here Really Go "Off"?
Does Beer Here Really Go "Off"?
So, since I feel strongly that all Asian beer is undrinkable, I am forced to seek alternatives here in beautiful PP. Obviously the cheap beer here isn't part of the city's draw for me - ha!
I have found and stock 4 varieties now (in order of affection): Sierra Nevada Torpedo (7.2%) - USA, incredibly robust "hoppy" flavour (made The Guardian's top 10 beers on the globe) , Maredsous (whopping 10%) - strong, pungent "Trappist" Belgian, Leffe (6.5%), Belgian, both dark and light kinds, pleasant, smooth, Boddingtons (disappointing 3.5% - but I spike it with vanilla vodka - sounds odd but is wonderful), UK, smooth, buttery, a tad sweet, great head (with a widget ala Guiness).
Since I am a super-lightweight drinker I limit myself to 1-2 each of these groovy brews. I bought a few cases of each because here it can be seen here today and never seen again tomorrow. This leads me to the issue of expiration dates because it takes me years to get through a case, well not years, but....
Researching online I read that within 6-9 months of distribution most breweries put their dates. But apparently the stronger the beer the longer it lasts - the flavour that is - in particular the "original flavour" from the maker. They want the customer, understandably, to have the exact same experience every time they drink their beer.
From my personal experience I can't tell the difference once the date has been passed from the taste when it was before expired (SN now almost a year old now). In fact, the kick-ass Maredsous has a 2-year exp. date from when I just bought it. Hmmm...
Has anyone ever had "bad beer" that was spoiled from being too old? High quality or regular beer? Just curious...

Yes. In my experience, and opinion, beer can stale, changing the taste slightly. I am not sure how to describe the taste (perhaps kind of tinny/mildewy), but it seems pretty consistent for different types of beer. For me it isn't so bad that it makes it undrinkable, but it is not as good as fresh. I assume it is age that causes it, but I have also heard it said that poor storage, repeated tempurture changes can cause it too.
Great info, LTO. It sounds like it involved "taste" and didn't mean that is was "bad beer". Do you ever pay attention to the dates and did you notice that it was expired and by how long?LTO wrote:Yes. In my experience, and opinion, beer can stale, changing the taste slightly. I think its down to how sensitive your taste buds are, mate of mine would always get me to taste his beer because he thought it was off, I couldn't tell the diffrence most times. He would check the dates on the bottle and everytime it would be out of date, If you check the dates on the beer you will find that a lot of it is out of date, especially in small mom and pop shops, they dont throw it a way when it runs out of date
Good point. Well, it will probably take me another year to polish off the case of SN so...we shall see...jd wrote:I think its down to how sensitive your taste buds are, mate of mine would always get me to taste his beer because he thought it was off, I couldn't tell the diffrence most times. To my taste buds, all the beer they sell here is wildly "off". Unless you search and pay the premium. Useless soda-pop overly-carbonated foul-smelling pure piss (the human kind) - the lot.

Doesn't sunlight affect beer?
I heard that is why beer normally comes in brown bottles in the tropics and green bottles in Eurofag countries like the Netherlands. Something about how the colored glass filters the light.

Many years ago I had a private gig (teaching English) at the Angkor Brewery In SHV and the manager told me why the beer in town (SHV) tasted better than In PP . Simple, it sits on truck being boiled in the hot sun for god knows how long,it is picked up , chucked around, cooled , boiled again and all within a few day days and then opened and put through pipes which aren't properly cleaned. Never drank draft beer again in this country. Does beer go off in the tropics/ yes and that's why us Brits invented Indian Pale Ale IPA.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.
They found a easy solution to that problem....Formaline does wonders for keeping it fresh but unfortunately does not have the same effect on your body until you die

I have some friends in the US who drink hipster beers like Anchor Steam and Sierra Nevada and whatnot. About 3-4 years ago, I had some people over at my condo and they brought some of those beers. They didn't drink them all. I only drink Bud Light when I'm in the U.S., so most of their beers are still in my fridge. If and when they come back over and want a beer, I'm serving them the four year old Sierra Nevada.

See, that's the difference between you and me. I like a good quality beer, but I'd rather drink 20 cans of Klang than 2 glasses of some poncy shit. I'm into drinking large quantities of alcohol, you like to sip on miniscule amounts of something a bit tastier. I'm not a snob, I'm a drunk.Dagenham wrote: Since I am a super-lightweight drinker..

Dagenham,
I'm trying to get an image of you in my mind mate, but i keep getting a clean living, fine wine drinking ,dreadlock sporting, healthy eating exercise freak, wife beater wearing artist chap, who also has a korean fingerprint lock and a penchant for high class blow jobs.

"I don't care what the people are thinking, i ain't drunk i'm just drinking"
Impressive. Close, so very close...no wife beaters (only button collared shirts) or dreads and no fine wine (too pricey - them bottles are tres expensive)...expensive high-alcohol content beer? yes indeed...spitthedog wrote:Dagenham,

Wow, G-Mac. And you're a lawyer, for reals like? Drinking absolute crap beer and letting "real beer" sit unattended in your fridge? A condo with that shocking taste in beer? Do you really live in a trailer? Do you use deodorant? Do you watch Honey Boo Boo?gavinmac wrote:I have some friends in the US who drink hipster beers like Anchor Steam and Sierra Nevada and whatnot.
