Hi everyone. I'm new here and is from the States. I'm just wondering why everyone picked Cambodia instead of all those other places (Thai, Viet, etc.)
I have a chance to move back to Cambodia but is still unsure. I want to know if there things that I am overlooking.
Nice to meet everyone.
Why Cambodia??

Why Cambodia??
Wanderlust - A strong desire for or impulse to wander or travel and explore the world.
Hi qhmer, welcome onboard.
There probably has already been discussion threads about this, so maybe someone can find them and link them to you in this thread.
As for me, it's pretty simple. I chose to live in Cambodia because it's my parents' homeland. I'm from France (was born and grew up there).

I'm sure there are plenty of threads on this topic but i'm sure there's nothing wrong with a new one. lol
Anyways, how long have you been living in Cambodia? I was born in Cambodia also and just want to get a sense of what keeps everyone in Cambodia when you can go else where. I'm sure there are plenty of Cambodians who would love to go oversea instead.

This thread may give you an idea as to why some of the Westerners chose to come here.

You will also find some retorts from me, a Cambodian who came back to live here.
By elsewhere, you mean their home country? You are going to have to ask them.qhmer wrote:I was born in Cambodia also and just want to get a sense of what keeps everyone in Cambodia when you can go else where.
In my case, what keeps me here? family.
At the risk of generalising, if I was a local Cambodian, unlessqhmer wrote:I'm sure there are plenty of Cambodians who would love to go oversea instead.
(a) I was really attached to my family
(b) I was a member of the corrupt and ultra-rich elite or a quite financially comfortable nouveau riche family
(c) I had a reasonably well-paid and interesting job or ran a reasonably profitable business
(d) I did something worthwhile, especially something I wanted to do in/for Cambodia
I would seize any opportunity to live and work abroad (except in a few places, like Somalia, Iraq and Russia, just half-kidding about that last one ) to be able to improve my and my family's lot, in almost every way (financially, intellectually, democratically, just to mention a few).
Dudely, that's a crap thing to say. The guy was born in Cambodia and his English is perfectly understandable.Biker wrote:Before you come here, go back to school and learn how to write in English!!!!
Nice to hear from you OP.
I've been living in Cambodia for 11 years now. However, I wasn't born in Cambodia, I was born in France and grew up in France.qhmer wrote:I'm sure there are plenty of threads on this topic but i'm sure there's nothing wrong with a new one. lol

I could've remained in France, but I was aspiring to something more than the life that awaited me back there. People move for their very personal reasons. Cambodia is my home now.

Eleven years? I pictured you as younger than you are. Do you have citizenship?Joon wrote:I've been living in Cambodia for 11 years now. I would like to live and work abroad as well but I'm just a bit confused as to what I want at the moment because I am technically living and working abroad already. At the risk of generalising, if I was a local Cambodian, unless

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living in Cambodia?? And around how old were you when you moved back to Cambodia?I've been living in Cambodia for 11 years now. However, I wasn't born in Cambodia, I was born in France and grew up in France.

I take it your Khmer language skills are top notch. If not, I hope you don't live in Cambodia, because that would make you a hypocrite and a dumbass.Biker wrote:Before you come here, go back to school and learn how to write in English!!!!
That's like, your opinion, man.

I was created to take the heat from frustrated english teachers who can only afford to wank themselves.
No doubt you're about to get some good info here as to why people like living in Cambodia.
I can't stand living in Cambodia during the summer / wet season (I've lived through three) but enjoy the winter time.
If your savings allow, why not spend a few months backpacking through Thailand, Laos and Vietnam before coming to Cambodia and check it all out in person.
My Three Mothers Tell Me I'm An Attention Whore.. I Love My Mums
I came to Cambodia because I actually like kids and teaching, but I couldn't do that in Europe, because I realised that too late in life: there I'm too old to even become a teaching assistant! Well, was always interested in teaching but I kind of forgot about it when I was busy making money and taking care of family... and the fact that in those days I didn't think very highly of the traditional education methods that alienated me. And the fact that I never liked cold, damp England and its miserable people. I'd rather be in warm, wet Cambodia.
Folks here keep ribbing about the teachers salaries here, and it is true that they have most likely suffered the biggest inflation of all jobs - and continue to do so as long as there are schools that don't care about the quality of teachers but have the advertising value of a foreign face... But to teach is a calling, and no other kind of foreigner comes to teach here permanently... Well, OK, some do, because they want easier life and out of the rat race in their own countries, have a Cambodian wife who refuses to leave her parents and extended family behind, and those that retire here and may use part-time teaching job as a way of warding off boredom. The loudest people here of course perpetrate Cambodian culture they love so much, by convincing themselves that money is everything. I'm not saying though that I wouldn't like to be rich...
