I will be in Cambodia for a week in February and is wondering where else I can travel to, i got about 3 weeks of free time after Cambodia. I was thinking taking a bus to and around Thailand, then maybe goto Malaysia??
Any ideas? Anyone have backpacked around South East Asia and have some good recommendations?

Going around SE Asia
Wanderlust - A strong desire for or impulse to wander or travel and explore the world.
Did you already extensively visit Cambodia? If not, I would recommend you to stay one more week and do a grand tour of Cambodia (Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Kep, Mondolkiri, Rattanakiri, Stung Treng/Kratie, Siem Reap, Poipet, then Thailand.)
You could also plan it so you end up either near Laos or Vietnam.
But if you want to explore more of SEA, I'd say Myanmar is worth a look. Malaysia is easily accessible with a 2-hour flight. South Vietnam and Laos are easily accessible by road. For Thailand, if you plan to go to Bangkok, transportation will eat away your time.
Maybe you should tell a bit more about what you would like to see and expect from your trip.

Cambodia needs at least 10 to 12 days and take in Siem Rep ( the temples and lake) and PP, Possible Kratie to see the dolphins
If ur going to the beaches in Thailand no reason to go to the ones in Cambodia.
of all the countries in se asia Malaysia would be the last one to visit.
why not fly from Cambodia to Myanmar (VOA) spend a week or two
Mandalay/ Bagan/inle lake would take 10 days or so
than fly back to Bangkok head to to the beaches down south or the peaceful, beautiful north ( not to say the south is not beautiful )

Just do 1.5 weeks in thailand and 1.5 weeks in cambodia. No point in rushing around trying to see everything; you'll end up seeing nothing. Also, don't underestimate the amount of time travel between towns, cities, and countries can all be. You want to enjoy your vacation, nor just fill up passport pages.

I am a Cambodian native but I primarily stay in PP when i'm visiting, of course I've been to Siem Reap, Kep, KPS, and Poipet. It was mostly go there and eat, never enjoyed it like an expat. I've been to Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh city as well, as again..... I would like to experience something new and different. My one week in Cambodia is mainly for a wedding, that's pretty much it.

The truth is that the only thing that matters is what I think because in the end you're going to give me all your money anyway.
No one ever talks about Mondulkiri or Ratanakiri and that part of the country is magnificent. That's probably because it's sparsely populated which is why it's so great. Mountaineous, covered in green jungles, the people are so real and friendly...great places to go.Joon wrote:Did you already extensively visit Cambodia? Khone-Phapheng, Fane, Yuang, Phasouam waterfalls and Kong Lor cave in southern Laos. Bang Fai cave but it is not easy to access.qhmer wrote:I will be in Cambodia for a week in February and is wondering where else I can travel to, i got about 3 weeks of free time after Cambodia. I would suggest taking a visit to Rabbit Island, off of Kep. It is very minimalistic, but I have a lot of fun times there. Good for a few quiet days to yourself.
