Do hostess bars pay kickbacks to tuk tuk drivers?
When I was reading the corruption thread, it occurred to be that there is an aspect of the operation of hostess bars that I know absolutely nothing about. Specifically, I have no ideas if hostess bars pay commissions to tuk tuk drivers who bring customers there.
When I first started visiting Cambodia, airport taxi drivers would always ask me if I had already booked my hotel and then they would try to take me to Hawaii Hotel. In the last five or so years though, none of them have tried to divert me to a hotel.
We had a thread a few months back, and there was a discussion of hospitals, and someone said hospitals pay commissions to tuk tuk drivers who bring in sick Westerners.
I don't THINK hostess bars pay commissions to tuk tuk drivers, but I'm not sure. I've never seen a driver hanging around after dropping me off, trying to get a commission. I've never asked a driver to take me to Shanghai Bar and then had him try to divert me to a crap place like Bluebird Bar for a commission. I've never heard a hostess bar owner lamenting that he has to pay kickbacks to tuk tuk drivers.
It would make sense though for hostess bars to pay commissions to tuk tuk drivers if the drivers actually diverted customers to the place. I guess they don't want to be paying commissions though to drivers who just transport customers who already specifically wanted to go there.
In Las Vegas, the kickback culture for bringing tourists to strip clubs is institutionalized. Cab drivers receive $20 -$30 a head from the club for each customer they bring, the club gets that money back in the form of a cover charge. If you tell the entrance girl that you are a local and you drove yourself, and they confirm you didn't come in a taxi, they waive the cover charge.
Limos park near the porte cocheres of each major Las Vegas hotel at night, and if you exit the hotel and tell the doorman that your group of four wants a taxi to a strip club, the doorman will divert you to a "free" or low priced limo instead of a regular taxi. The limo driver gets $80-$120 from the club for driving your group three miles and dropping you off there (he'll try to divert you to the ones paying the highest kickback). This is in addition to whatever fare and tip you may give the limo driver. Then the limo driver kicks back something to the doorman.
I think one of the problems with having a tuk tuk kickback system for Phnom Penh hostess bars is that the hostess bars are all grouped together and sometimes guys just go to "Street 104," wander into a bar for thirty seconds, don't have a drink, or have one $1.75 drink and leave, go to the next one and drop $40, etc. This makes it harder to manage the kickback system than if the hostess bars were spaced out and whoever was dropped there by a tuk tuk became a guaranteed "captive audience" of the bar due to remote geography.
Anyway, my question still stands, do any hostess bars (or other Western bars or restaurants) pay kickbacks to tuk tuk drivers, and if so, what bars/restaurants pay them and how much do they pay? If not, do the tuk tuk drivers sometimes try to angle for a kickback and is the lack of kickbacking a source of contention with drivers?

I think the better and easier angle for a tuk tuk is not to try to get a commission for taking someone to a girly bar, but to wait outside a girly bar and try to get a commission from a hotel for taking a customer and his new girlfriend to the hotel from the girly bar.

I think the majority of dudes don't go from hostess bar to short time hotel. They go to their own hotel, or to their apartment, or to a club for "dancing." Scavenger probably foregoes hotels and just goes to girl's place.

it depends but yes, if possible i go in their place.gavinmac wrote:Scavenger probably foregoes hotels and just goes to girl's place.
short time hotels are also OK, i like the sleazy atmosphere.
i just don't feel safe bringing girls in my house especially if they stay overnight but if there's a good chemistry it's OK, i kept some girls 3-4 days in a few occasions but you must always hide your valueables, bargirls will not steal but freelancers have nothing to lose.
actually going where they live is one of the highlights, there's so much you can learn about girls from the small details in their room, of course you need some sense of adventure, some girls took me in VERY rough places but it all adds to the excitement.
it's funny that tourists will never suspect these nice ladies live in such shitholes, it must be seen to be believed, somebody should make a documentary.
Most live with at least 6 other whores and sleep on a shitty mattress on the floor. Moreover, they rarely clean the joint or even pay the bills.Scavenger wrote: it depends but yes, if possible i go in their place.
What type of moron takes a girl out "dancing"?gavinmac wrote:I think the majority of dudes don't go from hostess bar to short time hotel. They go to their own hotel, or to their apartment, or to a club for "dancing."

Don't they usually share a single room with a bunch of other hostesses though? Do you have to kick them out while going boom boom?Scavenger wrote:it depends but yes, if possible i go in their place.gavinmac wrote:Scavenger probably foregoes hotels and just goes to girl's place.

yes you do, and in a couple cases we boom boom while other two girls were coming and going to the room to take their clothes or watching TV, absolutely no problem and business as usual, actually they had fun watching us and then we drank tea and some shit food together.MekongMouse wrote:Don't they usually share a single room with a bunch of other hostesses though? however, some girls have a small single room with one bed and no windows and they only share the kitchen and bathroom, these are typically the filthiest buildings of colonial era you can imagine, like a labyrinth, dark, smelly, and with dodgy khmer guys in the ground floor drinking and playing cards.
most of the bargirls working in the riverside live in places like this, horrible buildings near Psar Chas and Psar Kandal but some are next door to the bars in 130 and 136, while in some cases they just rent a normal apartment and share it with 4-5 girls, typically 30-50$/month per girl, some sleep on the floor and others have a proper bed, they don't give a shit.

Regardless of whether or not Scavenger is being honest with his posts (I hope he is), I certainly get a laugh from them.Scavenger wrote:yes you do, and in a couple cases we boom boom while other two girls were coming and going to the room to take their clothes or watching TV, absolutely no problem and business as usual, actually they had fun watching us and then we drank tea and some shit food together.MekongMouse wrote:Don't they usually share a single room with a bunch of other hostesses though?
