Education Visa for Thailand and air ticket
Education Visa for Thailand and air ticket
I want to bring my khmer girlfriend to Thailand for a long stay. She can learn Thai quickly because of similarities to Thai but she has great trouble with english. So I am considering having her come on an education visa to learn english. The schools are advising me that the Thai Consulate in Phnom Penh is difficult with approving these so it would be best to have her come on a 60 day tourist visa, then apply for an Education Visa in Laos. That is fine except for the inconvenience and extra costs. Does anyone know if this is true about the Consulate there? I would expect that all Thai Embassies and Consulates adhere to the same policies, more or less.
Second, I would like to order an air ticket online and make it easily available. She has very little experience with airports or etickets. Through a travel agent presents problems with payment - previously, it cost me $50.00 in bank fees to transfer $400.00 to an agent in Phnom Penh - crazy Thai banking rules. Any suggestions?

first,
have her obtain a tourist visa ( use a travel agent in PP) and she can stay 60 days which can be extended for an additional 30 for 1,900 baht
during that time find a school, pay for it ( average is about 10-12,000 baht for 6 months , English course here in phuket....A one week English for All course of 10 lessons costs 2,100 Baht per person http://www.phuket-languageschool.com/pr ... sh/#forall) and she would need to sign up for at least a 6 month course to get a ed visa and they will do all the paperwork for her to got to an embassy or consolute an obtain a single entry ED non immigrant visa in in laos or Penang or Phnom Phen. IT takes abut 2-5 weeks to get all the paperwork ready to apply for the ed visa.
She will NEED to leave to get her ed visa
EVERY thai embassy and consolute is independent an none seem to follow the same rules.
Air ticket
Just go to air asia online an buy her ticket in her name, u pay for it and they will send u confirmation which u can than forward to her via email which she than prints . If she cant understand there are many many travel agents that will help her.
done it many times

Just be aware, when purchasing tickets for someone else with your own credit or debit card you should contact the airline to explain that you are purchasing the ticket for someone else and will not be traveling with them. Several times when traveling on Air Asia and Bangkok Airways from PP with a ticket purchased online, I have been asked to show them the card that I used to purchase my ticket with.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.
The Thai consulate in Phnom Penh does have the reputation for being stricter than most Thai consulates.

I've heard also this (never happen to me), so go to office and pay with cash.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Several times when traveling on Air Asia and Bangkok Airways from PP with a ticket purchased online, I have been asked to show them the card that I used to purchase my ticket with.
Last time i buy AirAsia ticket with cash from their office in PNH i did get it even cheaper than online
Pardon my engrish, thanks you.
Thank you all for your effort in making replies. The point about showing the credit card on which the ticket was purchased was a good one. I am not sure she will feel comfortable asking a travel agent to print her prepaid ticket when not purchased through them. Perhaps if we get the Thai 60 day visa through that agent......
Does anyone have any insight as to why this requirement to leave the country to get a visa? Seems on the face of it ridiculous and a loss of revenue in Thailand?

my gf has never been requested to show my cc an has never had any trouble getting a travel agent in pp to print her airline copy of her flight for a $1 or 2, they dont care
its Thailand, u need to leave to get the visa, it applies to everyone, you CANNOT get an ed visa in country
you can get an extension in country
air asia charges you a cc fee so thats why its more
you want a easy way to get her $$$?
open a bank account in ur name,
mail her the atm card an allow her to withdraw the $$ to buy whatever she wants ( airline ticket, gold, clothes)

Thanks a lot Phuket2006 for all of your detailed information. You have been very helpful.
I have decided to leave the ed visa behind until she has been here for a while. I would like her to get a DUAL ENTRY 60 DAY TOURIST VISA for Thailand. This way she can stay almost six months with one border run and two visits to Chiang Mai immigration to get 30 day extensions to her "permission to stay". The travel agent I have been using in Phnom Penh says they only do single entry.
Can anybody provide contact details for a knowledgeable agent that can process the dual entry visa through the Thai Consulate in Phnom Penh for her? She thinks to come to Chiang Mai on the 20th so time is short!!

PP wont issue a double
Savankhet , Vientiane in laos will
Get her a single in PP, fly to cm and after 60 days ( DONT EXTEND) head up to Laos for a double.
give ya 8 months

Having to apply for a visa from outside the country is common - even the uk do that. I presume it's because if they decide to deny the visa then they haven't got the hassle of having to remove you from the country.
Thank you for your input. Phuket2006 - you seem to always be there when needed. Thank you.
But your response has four questions that result:
1) why can Laos do this and NOT Phnom Penh - do the embassies and consulates really have that much latitude to set their own policies ( to lighten their workload?) independent of Bangkok?
2) Why not extend to get another 30 days from CM immigration?
3) how/why can we confirm that Vientiane will issue the dual entry before undertaking the time/cost of getting thete?
4) doing the math, she would come for 60 days under a tourist visa, forgo a 30 day extension, get a dual entry from Laos first for 60 days, a 30 day extension and a border run to "activate" the second part of the dual entry for another 60 days followed by a 30 day extension to her "permission to stay" by Chiang Mai Immigration before expiry of which she has to go home to Cambodia?

1. because they can
2. cause it looks better if she has NOT extended her visa. otherwise there is a good chance they will only issue her a single
3.u cant but u got to trust sometimes,
4. 60 days, go to laos, get a double, come back to Thailand stay 60 days, get an extensions for 30 days (1,900 baht)
end of 89 days go to anywhere , come back and do it again.
go home;
after that u can pretty much count on it that she will NOT get another tourist visa unless she waits a few months
NOTE sometimes , some borders might ask for a ticket out of Thailand and also 20,000 baht. Be prepared to show it..
Read the below, thai visa will give u 10x the info u will get here
