PP-SR boat
Anybody taken a boat between the two? I did but it was about 10 years ago. My parents are in town and I was wondering if the boat is a nice option.
Sorry, can't help you with the boat option, but just to set off the discussion....Camsplodia wrote:Anybody taken a boat between the two? I did but it was about 10 years ago. My parents are in town and I was wondering if the boat is a nice option.
I took the minibus nearly two weeks ago. After them combining two minibuses I ended up in a backseat for half price. It was pretty terrible... Pls remind yourself, and your parents, the road is under construction all the way to Kompong Thom, and that's a pretty long stretch from Phnom Penh..... An air ticket might safe your parents suffering from a hernia.....

Neither boat nor bus are nice options at the moment.
The boat is very loud and there is bugger all to see.
The bus will take close to 8 hours at the moment.

Re the bus option are Giant Ibis one of the better ones or are they all pretty much the same. I'm thinking comfort, reliability & safety. Used them before and will be doing the trip again soon.Hanno wrote:Neither boat nor bus are nice options at the moment.

Giant Ibis is the bus company to go for. OK, the food at their restaurant is dire, but their drivers are not (complete) maniacs and the service is pretty good. Forget comfort with the state the road is in at the moment.

It was a good option 10 years ago when it was cheap. Still, your in a cramped, stifling, dieselly, rolling, sausage that's prone to breakdown & grounding. Most of the trip you're in the middle of the lake with nothing to see. All this for bargain price of $35. Best to get a big hat, dip yourself in sun cream, & sit on top. Better yet, get a taxi. It's a lot more comfortable. 3 or more and you're saving $$.

I got the boat to Siem Reap in 2000, it was a good option then as the road was a mess. The road is a mess again so it's worth considering, but as far as boat journeys go don't expect to see much. I wouldn't recommend sitting on the roof for more than a short time, you'll get completely fried.

Did the boat trip from Siem Reap in 1998. After a hard month of partying and consuming it was time to do a visa renewal, so i boarded the boat still pretty high and exhausted from one last bender and thought It would be a nice cruise down the lake top Phnom Penh.
Took a look inside and the smell was a no no , the roof it would have to be, no problem i thought I've got two large bottles of water and I'm wearing a hat and long sleeved shirt and trousers/jeans but not shorts this i remember. I plonk myself down at the back near a bloke who was wearing a crash helmet, strange i thought at the time, but he was the driver and the helmet was too reduce noise not for safety as I found at a little while later. He started up the engine and the boat took off as did my hat in the wind, as I tried to grab my hat the two water bottles rolled off the side and into the lake closely followed by the hat. Bollocks, bollocks what to fucking do? No water nor no sun protection for the head and face! Then I remember I still had two Es left over and thought fuck it why not, spotted a German looking fella down at the front who was sipping from a bottle so I crawled up to him ( wasn't too easy to walk up top) and I think I asked for a sip of water, but i may just have grabbed the bottle, and necked the two pills in front of him.
Back i went to the back as i didn't want to be disturb or bothered and settled down for my trip, literally, slowly the engine noise became a thumping acid house tune with a stomping bass and then I started to notice the clouds on the horizon, they were turning into medieval knights jousting each other, fucking brilliant better than any cinema. After an hour or so something caught my eye out on the lake and as I looked the something turned into a lit candle which then rose from the water on the top tier of a 3 tiered wedding cake, fucking wonderful thing to see and as I looked around the whole of the Tonle Sap was full of wedding cakes with burning candles on top. A most beautiful journey was had. by the time I arrived in Phnom Penh I had gone deaf from the engine noise and had also lost my voice due to dehydration and everybody who met me those first couple of days thought I was some deaf mute nutter.
Don't do the boat fly.

Hey,
Cheers for the great info. My parents aren't spring chickens and the road is indeed a bloody nightmare at the moment so a flight may well be the best way.
I second Giant Ibis. It's a good bus and the drivers aren't allowed to drive like maniacs.
