Someone sent me some money with Wing the other day and it worked very well.
I'd like to know if there's a similar service available in Thailand (for sending money between individuals within the country without the use of a bank account).
Thanks in advance.

Not to my knowledge, the Bank of Thailand (regulator) hasn't given to green light for 'Mobile Money' services the same as Cambodia just yet. We've met BoT on a few occasions to explain how Wing works, how it is regulated, etc, I would expect that situation to change in the next year or two, but today - not as far as I know. Closest thing to it is via TrueMoney as far as I am aware, but believe that is just for bill payments, airtime top up - not a nationwide network like Wing.
You will see some fake 'Wing' outlets on the border with Cambodia though, cheeky sods!

I suspected that was probably the case but good to have it confirmed.
Thanks, Spigzy.

If you want to send money outside of the banking system there are ways that function like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawala
It might put you on a terrorist watchlist if you are unfortunate enough haha. Or maybe I am too paranoid
My wife (Thai national) used it once and it worked but of course it does carry some risk and you pay a certain percentage for the transfer. I don't know what the reason is of not using a bank, you could check out the various crypto-currencies or online ways of sending money but it depends how IT savvy you / the people who use it are.

I guess the reason about Wing was for mobile convenience. Otherwise you can always Western Union. Not a bank, covers dunno perhaps 99% of the planet? and also costs "a percentage", like every other method out there....kiiniaew wrote:If you want to send money outside of the banking system there are ways that function like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawala
