A question about hostess bar advertising ethics
If a hostess bar uses photos of girls in its ads, and a featured girl leaves employment at the bar, how long can the bar reasonably continue using that photo in its advertising?
I ask because earlier this week I saw an angry dude come into a hostess bar ranting and raving to the owner about advertising material depicting a former bargirl. He had presumably married her or "taken her out of the bar" or something and was pretty worked up about seeing her in a group shot of hostesses in some advertising. I'd think that sort of thing comes with the territory.
I don't believe that hostess bars are morally obligated to immediately destroy all advertising collateral with photos of staff every time a girl leaves. I also don't think hostess bar advertising should just include the hottest chicks who haven't worked there in many years.
The Shanghai Bar website actually has "class picture" staff photos dating back to 2003-05. That's a long time. The photos are clearly labeled by date though, and of course, some of those girls still work there.

I don't believe that a hostess bar has any responsibility to update it's photos.
Yes, I would like them to be updated on a much more regular basis, but they are not obliged to do this.
It's like asking Google to delete all the videos of movie stars before they were famous.
I'm sorry, but your wife did work here and here's a photo of her working hard to make a living.
It's no different from screen stars doing soft porn to get their career started and then complaining about it once they became famous.

I think most adverts should have the disclaimer "Artists impression, reality may vary."
We used a picture at 104 for many years because it was a very good picture of 4 staff who had long left the business. Had someone come and asked for their picture to be removed it would have been.

When I signed the contract with my present employer one of the clauses stated that they were entitled to take our photograph and use it in their advertising - for ever...

This has become a bigger issue recently as I think bargirls have got much more reluctant to feature in their bar's advertising. This is either because as in the case above the boyfriend doesn't want to be reminded that he is with an ex bargirl, or because the girls are studying during the day at school and don't want their classmates and friends to see racy pictures of them in sexy clothing in a hostess bar.gavinmac wrote:If a hostess bar uses photos of girls in its ads, and a featured girl leaves employment at the bar, how long can the bar reasonably continue using that photo in its advertising?

I find this slightly ironic as most of the girls are perfectly happy to post pictures of themselves in sexy poses or very drunk, on their own Facebook pages, which are invariably viewable by the entire public.
We are careful to get a signed model release form these days, and in the past we got verbal permission from the girls. When they leave the bar we ask them if they want their pictures removed from all sources - web, print advertising etc. Some don't care, some are insistent that all pictorial traces of their period at the bar are removed.
As far as using the actual girls working at the bar in advertising, rather than models or previous workers, I didn't think it mattered.
However I'm surprised at how many customers ask if the girls in the photos are actually in the bar. We had one guy email us a few times just before he arrived here from Hawaii, seeking reassurance that one of the girls in one of our web pictures was still at the bar so he could see her.

Well, that's just good planning right there.
Out of curiosity, do girls who feature in bar advertising photographs usually get any extra money for doing that? Other than the invaluable international publicity?

I tipped the Sugar girls...and they got copies of the photo proofs. Eventually I did away with the girly pictures, as the bar crackdown hit and a certain lady there that many here remember well looked about 15 in her picture. Of course, that didn't hurt her popularity in the least or her abundant...tips.
