Where To Live in Asia Thats Quiet, Clean, Scenic?
Hi,
I have been doing a lot of research on Thailand and came across a book on moving to Cambodia. I very much like the cultural values, the buddhist philosophy, and the affordability of both countries.
I can afford around $2-4k per month indefintely and what I am seeking in particular, is to live in a beautifully scenic and quiet place, while I can play grand piano.
Somewhere that is relatively clean, has good air, and is not farther than an hour away from nightlife / dating / restaurants.
My first question is, is it even possible to purchase a grand piano in Cambodia? lol

grand might be a bit tougher.
But 'cultural values, Buddhist philosophy, beautiful scenery and quiet'? Only in the guide books mate. You'd be better off in the Gobi Desert if that's what you're looking for.

I wouldn't come for the Buddhist philosophy, you'll be sorely disappointed.PianoMonk wrote:Hi,

I kinda like Pai up in the mountains near Chiang Mai. The even have flights in & out now. They had some problems with out of control police a few years back though. I'm sure you could get a GP in CM.
if it makes it any easier ....then disregarding philosophy and culture, where would you recommend?

It's possible to buy a grand piano here, but it is never quiet, nor clean. Scenic...in many places.

Switzerland? Scandinavia?

Any apartment at least 10 stories up in a new high-rise.Somewhere that is relatively clean, has good air, and is not farther than an hour away from nightlife / dating / restaurants.

Isn't there a significant difference between 2k and 4k? If it was 4k guaranteed, I'd send you off to Singapore. They have quiet "woodlands" areas where piano wouldn't disturb anyone, quite marvellous actually if you score a scenic spot. It's not all shiny highrises in Singapore. Nightlife, check. More nature than the local forest, jet off to Malaysian or Indonesian islands. You could do Singapore on 2k but it wouldn't be quiet or much nature on that budget I guess.PianoMonk wrote:I can afford around $2-4k per month indefintely
Penang is also worth scooping out. Easily fits that budget and outstanding nature (jungle, hills, beaches, hiking paths, biking paths lately) all around Georgetown. Nightlife, check. Old refurbished colonials, check. Old chinese mansions and countless temples, yep.
Cambodia is a great choice on a shoestring, but you don't seem to be on a shoestring so not quite sure why you're even considering it. You'll also want to consider Laos, somewhere near Luang Prabang or perhaps now that "they cleaned up the place" Vang Vieng, but not sure.. quiet there too, with Unesco Heritage status for LP you won't even suffer car traffic I hear.
Someone who has indefinite funds and largely wants a quiet place to play piano sounds like someone at an age where being near reliable health services would be a must-have factor. Again, Singapore or Malaysia would fit that bill better.
I have various reasons to prefer Cambodia to all these other places, namely not an indefinite guaranteed income and no desire at all for quiet places... so the above is really for you and wouldn't be for me
Thank you very much for this detailed post. In terms of nightlife/dating I should have clarified, by that I meant at least within an hour distance from not very expensive girl-bars / restaurants. When you consider this is the picture, then 4k goes by fast and I'm actually in my 20's as well. So what do you think? Interested to hear your insight

The last poster in his 20s using the word Monk in his ID didn't last very long. I hope you have more luck in Cambodia than he did.
Lol thanks for the tip. I'm open to anywhere in Asia actially.

He wants the nightlife too, though. Doesn't sound he's up for the appalling backpacker hippy bollocks at VV, and there's nothing in LP or Vientiane. The notion of communing with nature at his piano AND hitting the nightlife an hour later sounds like a fantasy to me - to be fair, a fantasy that was half-formed in my mind before I came here too.metaleap wrote:You'll also want to consider Laos, somewhere near Luang Prabang or perhaps now that "they cleaned up the place" Vang Vieng, but not sure.. quiet there too, with Unesco Heritage status for LP you won't even suffer car traffic I hear.

I'm sorry that you couldn't find your fantasy. I'm not looking for the perfect match by the way, just something very close, if nothing else.andyinasia wrote:He wants the nightlife too, though.
