My optometrist commented on how many children are having eye problems and she suggested always using proper UV protection. Definitely worth considering.
Some excerpts;
http://www.allaboutvision.com/parents/sunglasses.htm
'Because children tend to spend more time outdoors than most adults, some experts say nearly half of a person's lifetime exposure to ultraviolet radiation can take place by age 18. (Other research cited by The Skin Cancer Foundation suggests the amount of lifetime exposure to UV radiation sustained by age 18 is less than 25 percent.)'
'Extended exposure to the sun's UV rays has been linked to eye damage, including cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae and pterygia and photokeratitis that can cause temporary vision loss.'
'A number of scientific studies indicate that spending long hours in the sun without eye protection can damage your eyes by contributing to cataracts, macular degeneration, and growths on the eye, including cancer. Based on these studies, ophthalmologists recommend that you wear 99% and above UV-absorbent sunglasses.'
UV sun glasses. Worth the extra cost?
All glass filters UV, that's why you can't get a suntan sitting in a greenhouse.

Good luck with that myth
There are 3 types of ultraviolet radiation, but only two reach the earth's surface. These are UVA and UVB. UVC is filtered out by the ozone layer.
UVA mostly causes skin ageing and research has now shown that it is also likely to cause skin cancer. UVB causes redness and sunburn and is a major risk factor for all types of skin cancer.
Most glass used for windows blocks UVB but not UVA. This means that although glass might reduce the risk of sunburn, it does not prevent long term damage from UVA.

Never mind.
To add to that, orde, most sunglasses nowadays also aren't made of glass
Actually, unless you're buying from the street vendors, a decent pair will have glass lenses. I wear RayBans, $50, glass. Full UV protection. Street vendor glasses = 0 uv protection. Spend a few bucks - or the older you get, the more you'll wish you had.

Great thread RainMan.
We live on our yacht so we are outdoors most of the time. I was always a bit concerned that my 2 year olds eyes were being damaged by so much exposure to the elements. We tried everything to get her to wear sunnies......nice try fail.
However my wife and I just persisted with trying to make her wear sunglasses for the last 6 moths or so. Getting ones that fit and comfortable for her was the biggest drama. We tried about 3 of 4 different pairs untill she found the ones she liked. 95% of the ones available are for kids around 5years and up.....damage is done by 5 with our life style.
So then we just made a point of reminding her we have ours on and point out to her that everyone else is wearing their sunnies . It's dam hard work at first. On one hand she was whingeing it's too bright.....then wont wear sunnies . Just kept chipping away at her . These days she won't leave the boat without them,I have about 3 spares now because she freaks if I cant find hers.
Now everyone comments to her how cool her sunnies are, she loves it!
Lots of other parents ask us how the hell do you get her to wear sunglasses?
Two word answer for that one...persistence and patience!

It is very necessary to protect our eyes from UV rays of sunlight . Right quality of sunglasses help us to protect our eyes fro dust and other things that are present in environment . I would advice to wear good quality sunglasses when we are out of our home .

My Serengetis are proper glass lenses, and have all sorts of high tech stuff in them, UVA and UVB filtering, and aren't polarised, so no more rainbows in my motorbike helmet (which is polarised - but not tinted)metaleap wrote:To add to that, orde, most sunglasses nowadays also aren't made of glass
They weren't cheap however... Don't know if you can get them in KH

You can buy them for reasonable money on Ebay just a matter of how you ship them here

The last month and a half was out of control hot here in Darwin...good old wet season build up. Nothing the the TWO big A/C units couldn't cope with though ! Get our money's worth when power is inclusive . We prefer to spend the wet in Darwin rather than Cairns...just too much rain there and way more cyclone action also. I am sure RainMan would love it there...ha ha. Heading to Cambodia the second the weather window opens after the wet.
