Minn. Teen Raising Money For Toilets For Cambodia

December 8, 2006

Dodge Center, Minn. (AP) - A Dodge Center, Minn. teenager is out to help the people of Cambodia -- one toilet at a time.

Naomi Wente, 15, visited Cambodia a year ago with her family and a group of students and teachers from Rochester Community and Technical College. The poverty she saw made her want to help.

She decided to focus on raising money to bring toilets to the country's villages. So far she's collected more than $2,000.

Kim Sin, a Cambodia native who now works at the Rochester college, helped organize the trip. He said improving toilet facilities in Cambodia is about more than sanitation. It can keep girls in school. That's because some of them are embarrassed to use primitive public toilets after they begin menstruating, and drop out of school.

Man, I did the same thing this spring and no one wrote an article about me. I'm not looking for publicity though. The toilets at Lighthouse were beyond capacity and the proximity of the old filthy toilet to the kitchen was too close for comfort.

Probably should have dumped lye down the old toilets, huh?

Man, I wish I had some kind of money back when I was 15 and wanted to do shit for Cambodia. Hell even now.

Anyway that is cool of her. She didn't raise money for a video game or her favorite shirt or even for a doctor's appointment. SDhe did for Cambodia and people she will mostly never know. Cool.

Well, you can do something, when I was in Cambodia we organized a toilet block to be built in a local school near our project, the toilet block cost US$3000 to build.

Why not pass the hat around to your friends and organise one to be built? You could even organize a K440 dunny block!

How about if we pass the hat and buy a new butt sprayer for the Banana Bar. The thing's been broken for over two years now. I stopped going to the place (strictly for internet access, of course) because of it. We're suffering over here!

Do you really need a butt sprayer in a bar that badly? How often do you crap in bar? Go home to crap like a normal person.

Wait, it just occurred that if the butt sprayer doesn't work, that might not affect us that much, but it would make the girls less clean. Good thinking. They may even be on the Arabic "left hand" method there. I'd stay away too.

Got pottie issues, do we? My parents weren't so neurotic during toilet training, so I can dump whenever it feels right and there's a suitable receptacle. Besides, it's not like you can further stink up an Asian toilet. I once knew a woman like you, who couldn't crap outside of her own house. I tried to take her back-packing in Big Sur, but that was right out. No fun having to restrict our dates to within 20 minutes of her house.

I can crap outside my house. I choose not to. Most of us can go more than 20 minutes without crapping, you know. I once went a week while on a hiking trip in Uganda. The immodium helped.

That's very civilized and considerate of you, good citizen.

speaking of crapping, does anyone else have the problem with their unsuitably large barang logs obstructing the bog pipes? I'm sure the gauge is smaller in these parts.

Why doesn't she raise money for toilets in India, which are a million times worse and more scarce than here. Imagine having to find a thorny bush to crap under cos otherwise the hogs will come up and snuffle at your ass while youre on the job, hell, its enough to make some people drop out of school.

Putting Jokes aside, I don't think that its important for all attempts to assist others to be on a grand scale, and when someone sees an issue and attempts to address that issue I say "Good On Them"

Lots of people on this board have traveled quite a bit, and so have I.

I have found that some of the most mundane and trivial things
( To us Westerners ) are in fact very important to local populations.
More so clean water - that is available to all, and quality sanitation.

Some might dismiss this persons attempts to build a dunny block in the outreaches of some place that isn't even on a map as insignificant.

But I think it’s a worth while effort, and if 440 members want to put some cash into a similar project I’ll put in AUD$50.

And of course I have to come up with the cash or Admin will cut my posting privlidge’s

Regards Kev

I researched google and read all the articles I could find regarding this sweet little girl's innocent kindness.

It appears she visited Cambodia a year ago and was personlly touched to do something kind for people she met and became bonded towards.

I applaud her.

She will be returning shortly with a college group and bring her proceeds to personally deliver to the needy.

I think this story should grace the front page of every newspaper and magazine in Cambodia as a dual purpose!

Firstly, that a young person can be so touched as to return home and initiate aid to strangers and bring 100% of the proceeds to the needy; all of her own accord and initiative.

"Still waiting on the NGO Help-wagon!

Secondly, as a role model and schematic of operations for every single NGO organization that destroys and damages and corrupts the ethic that this girl has revitalized and demonstrated. It takes a child to totally make NGOs look like total schmucks!

Before they complain, I challenge them to outdo Naomi Wente. Her penny is worth more than all the gold they keep for themselves and waste!

Shame on you NGOs to let a child put your billions to shame!!!
