American University of Phnom Penh
American University of Phnom Penh
I have applied for a teaching post at the American University of Phnom Penh, and I was wondering whether anyone could tell me more about the place. It seems like a very new school, and looks real from its website, but I would be interested in knowing whether anyone can offer me any more information about AUPP. It looks like most of the faculty have only been there for a short time, and I have heard that there is a very high turnover rate of faculty and staff. Obviously I want to know more before I commit myself to moving all the way from Chicago to Phnom Penh. Many thanks!

Yes, it's a fantastic place, Oxford and Cambridge are quaking in their boots.
High turnover? Oh no, that must be the teachers' fault.
Personally, I think you should definitely travel such a huge distance for a university you know nothing about. There is absolutely no chance of you being stranded without work.
I mean, what could go wrong?
Have a good time!

Indeed, that was my experience, he gives others maybe too much free reign, unusual in Cambodia.Playboy wrote:The Khmer Oknha who owns it is actually one of the better ones, however, the FuckNozzle Yankee on the Board there is a whole other kettle of corrupt prahok.

Lesley: I have a friend who work at AUPP, and based on their experience I would advise you to try to find out more before going to work there. I have been told that the new president is a dictator, changes her mind on a dime, and has fired at least three faculty members since she took over last year, two in the middle of the last semester (she apparently has a long record of this kind of thing; a Google search for her name might shed some light on this.) I have also been told that the grand plans on the AUPP website for a new and modern campus are a lie; the building was designed and announced, but it is apparently not going to be built. There are also programs and majors listed on the website that do not exist, and AUPP has no faculty in the areas in which they say they offer majors (although some the faculty who are there seem to have good credentials.)
BUT... I have all of this information second hand, so it may not be true at all. I suggest that you contact the university directly (particularly individual faculty members) and ask them if any or all of this is true. They also have an FB page.
I hope this helps!

Sounds like "business as usual" for American universities. The most corrupt, initiative-killing work environment imaginable. Just what Cambodia needs.
