That's three deaths this week in Phnom Penh alone, and two Brits. WTF is going on?

There was the unidentified chap outside the KFC, who could for all anyone knows so far be a Brit too, as well as the guy in the Tuk-Tuk and the 28 year old Russian in Sihanoukville.scobienz wrote:That's three deaths this week in Phnom Penh alone, and two Brits. WTF is going on?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
One really wishes people wouldn't do this in other countries while staying at someone else's property. Of course, one wishes they wouldn't do it at all but that's certainly wishful thinking.

Is that really a feasible way to hang oneself? Just sitting on the floor like that, I don't think there would be enough weight on the rope to do the job.

Exactly my thoughts. As anyone who has read The Secret Agent (Conrad) knows, in official hangings, there is a 'drop' calculated, based on the weight of the victim. Obviously, there wouldn't be much of a drop from the door handle to the floor. There must be more to it - in a severely intoxicated state, choking on one's own vomit would be possible. Or it could have been the dreaded heart attack. The latter has not been mentioned yet, though, rather surprisingly. RIP, poor chap.MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote:Is that really a feasible way to hang oneself? Just sitting on the floor like that, I don't think there would be enough weight on the rope to do the job.

Apparently it is possible. Called a 'partial hanging' http://www.forensicpathologyonline.com/ ... ia/hanging (scroll down)
Would also explain the very slight bruising/lack of bruising visible on the deceased's neck in the 'door handle, do not disturb' photo.
Although, I'm still surprised that the door didn't crack and the handle come out. It's the 'cheap-as-is-possible-plastic-door' you find in cheap guest-houses here, normally only used for the ensuite bathroom. Looks like it cracked a little, but I would have thought it wouldn't be strong enough if the victim started struggling and kicking.
Also odd that the 'do not disturb' sign is on the inside of the door.

It's supposed to be one of the more painless ways to kill yourself, you dose up on lots of sleeping pills, then set up a noose or plastic bag so that you will suffocate once you loose conciousness due to the pills. I had a friend checkout the same way, we later found out he had done extensive research on the best way to go.
It wouldn't surprise me if some people come here to do this specifically because of the ease of buying sedatives. People with manic depression often plan their suicide for months in advance.

Quite possible a case of auto-erotic asphyxiation ......... that's how they found Michael Hutchence
I have seen a victim hanging from a door handle in phnom penh, at the time someone said it was done in the first series of the wire. These deaths do come in a run dont they?

Poor bastard.
I dont think the deaths have really started or stopped Ken. They've been pretty bloody constant, even though the you, the grim reaper, have left the building.
Haha - my money’s on Playboy
The pixelated body on the photo does appear quite small, perhaps the Gentleman was a Dwarf or a Midget and the door handle was above his head height.MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote:Is that really a feasible way to hang oneself? Next time you see a lonely Dwarf, buy him a beer to cheer him up!

Maybe the press has stepped up reporting deaths and arrests of foreigners.Petrol Head wrote:David Carradine too.chubacca wrote:Quite possible a case of auto-erotic asphyxiation ......... that's how they found Michael Hutchence
