She demanded a payment after the rape: Khmer-Inception. But I guess rape is so common amongst sex-workers and there's such a slim chance that the offenders will be prosecuted that she might as well go for the money?"They negotiated a price of $10 for one person, and took the woman back to their construction site at Trapieng village.
However, after the customer had concluded intercourse, another five men entered and proceeded to rape the woman.
The police chief said that after the incident, the sex worker attempted to demand payment from the men involved and became engaged in an argument with the suspects."

The photos in the Khmer press were striking. Looking at the size of these perp men (they have the bodies of 13 year old boys) against the well-fed Phnom Penh cops. Like two different species of human entirely.Joon wrote:Holy shit they then killed her?

All that poor nutrition and absent parenting from the outset I reckon.

I could have sworn those middle two were 14 or 15.
Construction workers have an ultra macho culture which gets very dark when it comes to sex workers, particularly when there are young boys working alongside 30 year olds. They can't afford to buy it one-on-one so they pool money and the women are subjected to half a dozen men in a row. There was an al Jazeera report on it.

They call it Bauk, which means open. Tuk tuks and moto dops do it too. I read an article a while back that claimed that something like 20%-40% (if I remember correctly) of Motodops in Phnom Penh admitted to playing Bauk aka committing gang rape of a sex worker. I can't find the statistic, but here is an npr article describing the "game".

There's places where 5000 riel can buy sex, so no shortage of money here. Maybe shortage of information. I regularly read Khmer news from my phone and I never stop to wonder. Certainly lack of any education and any cultural ties.
Bauk stands for "add up". Someone negotiates and pays the price for one client and then more men join in. The sex workers are effectively raped.KPTIC wrote:They call it Bauk, which means open. I don't think those statistics could be taken seriously. My guess is it's fabricated to create a story. I just can't believe any segment of society would allow a culture of gang rape to be ok.KPTIC wrote:They call it Bauk, which means open. Tuk tuks and moto dops do it too. I find it somewhat ridiculous to believe that these motodops all openly admit to raping prostitutes. Sure the rapes happen but I doubt as often as the article suggests.

It's true, and common, and not limited to prostitutes. They also target 'modern girls.' Haven't heard about it as much in recent years as a decade ago. Not sure if that indicates a decline in the practice or just less talk about it.Gin&Tonic wrote:I don't think those statistics could be taken seriously. My guess is it's fabricated to create a story. Yes. I hope, and actually believe it's the former. In this age of social media, I don't believe anything is 'less talked about'.LTO wrote:It's true, and common, and not limited to prostitutes. Well, I think a decade ago those that did it didn't feel they were doing anything especially wrong, and nobody was being punished for it anyway. Today, it would be to admit to a major crime.
