Good beer selection?
Good beer selection?
Where is the best place in PP to buy beer? I am not looking for a bar as I want bottled beer/cans to take home. Is there anywhere that sells Newcastle Brown Ale, or any other British beers? What about American craft beers? I'm not holding out much hope, but thought it couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks in advance for any help.
You will struggle, I fear. I've never seen any Newcastle Brown Ale here, nor any of the decent bottled English beers. You might be able to find some Belgian beers in Thai Hout or Bayon now and again, but that's about it. USA Donut occasionally stock the odd case of American craft beer, but it's sporadic.
Super Duper has a different selection of beers.
There's also Belgian beers at a local café in Tuol Tumpong that sell at a starting price of USD4.50. It's called Bling Bling.
And Bia Hoi at Royal Minimart in TTP.

We did have a British beer renaissance for a while under Green Vespa, but they all seemed to do the great Cambodian disappearing act.
Last Brit I spotted was Boddingtons at Cavern, when it still served food. That seems to have gone the way of the dodo too.
No real reason to complain though, there is ubiquitous supply of quality Germans and Belgians around town. Wasn't the case when I lobbed 6 years ago.
Almost choked - last time I was back the super duper stocked Boags Premium and Carlton Draught! Unbelievable.
Draught Guinness remains the great white whale.

Surprisingly, Pencil on Norodom often has some great beers for cheap! You need to check often. The selection always changes, and if you find something you like, you better go back and buy more that same day! And don't try asking the staff or management when or if they will get more. They truly have no clue!
Go see Larry at Larry's 110 Street Bar and Grill. He's usually there from Thursday through Sunday after 4 pm (it's hit or miss on the other days and times. He's a busy guy!). He has some good brewer and distributor contacts. Unfortunately he's not on this forum because he has a real life.

I've never understood why there is no real selection here. There is an excellent beer shop across from the park opposite Pham Ngu Lao in HCMC. It sells beers from all around the world. I'm sure there would be demand for a similar store here.

Viets are the highest per capita consumers of beer in ASEAN and at least top 5 in the world.
The fellas I have had the pleasure working along side with over the years had a very sharp beer palate - craft breweries are very popular across the country.
When I was down in Vung Tau, one of the most popular places was a beer barn style place called Vuvuzela, with a large range of quality beers grouped by country. Stunning, modern Saigonese women throwing back Weissbiers with the best of them. A beautiful thing to see for a variety of reasons.

It's just a smaller town, less of a market for specialty import items here. I'm sure it will get better with time.

Green Vespa's opinion circa 2012 was that there were not enough affluent punters to make it viable.pablomiguelgarcia wrote:It's just a smaller town, less of a market for specialty import items here. I'm sure it will get better with time.
With the take up of the Irish Reds (which is good stuff) recently, I am no longer so sure about this.
The larger problem for importers and distributors, is that Cambodia is one of the cheapest markets for booze in the world thanks smuggling, endemic corruption and general "I don't give a shit" attitude towards law enforcement, so there is simply no margin to make it viable.

Surprised they don't have much on offer when even Lucky in Siem Reap has a decentish selection.
La Patate on Riverside or St.5 has a bottled Belgian beer selection.
Cantankerous Curmudgeon
As of today, Pencil has Oranjeboom and Leffe. They also consistently stock Tsingtao and other Chinese beers.
Thanks for all the replies. I'll check out some of the places listed and stock up!
