What percentage of Cambodians are Chinese-Khmer?
As we enter the year of the monkey, I'm reminded of something:
How many Khmers see themselves as Chinese-Khmers? I don't mean the ones who take advantage of the holiday, that's 101%, I mean the ones who probably speak Chinese almost fluently as well as Khmer.
Almost every house in my street is busy burning money, the lanterns are lit, etc. I just wonder how much is peer pressure and how many of them can actually speak Chinese/ adhere to Chinese culture first and Khmer culture second.
it's not an official Khmer holiday, even though most schools and many companies take off because it would be impractical to stay open.

My wife's dad is Chinese and she speaks Chinese too. Apart from her sister (who doesn't speak Chinese) they are the only ones who have Chinese blood in their family (as far as I'm aware) but they all celebrate CNY.
The wife does the food and gift buying (which I pay for of course) and a new dress for her mum "because she doesn't want people back home in her village to think she's poor", but she is poor and so are they!?
It's like the English and St Patrick's day. Flags up, specials on at the supermarket, TV adverts abuzz with the celebrations, everyone wearing Irish flags etc.
then when it's St George's Day it comes and goes without so much as a whimper!

"Chinese" isn't a language.YaTingPom wrote:My wife's dad is Chinese and she speaks Chinese too. Apart from her sister (who doesn't speak Chinese) they are the only ones who have Chinese blood in their family (as far as I'm aware) but they all celebrate CNY.
According to Schlesinger in Ethnic Groups of Cambodia the best guess is several hundred thousand Chinese with about two thirds being Teochieu. Cambodia census figures are completely unreliable.MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote:vladimir wrote:I don't mean the ones who take advantage of the holiday, that's 101%, I mean the ones who probably speak Chinese almost fluently as well as Khmer."Chinese" isn't a language.YaTingPom wrote:My wife's dad is Chinese and she speaks Chinese too. Don't blame me I voted for Sanders
I don't know which dialect she speaks so put "Chinese".MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote:vladimir wrote:I don't mean the ones who take advantage of the holiday, that's 101%, I mean the ones who probably speak Chinese almost fluently as well as Khmer."Chinese" isn't a language.YaTingPom wrote:My wife's dad is Chinese and she speaks Chinese too. Thanks, jm.
The CIA think it is only 1%...
https://www.cia.gov/library/publication ... os/cb.html
I would personally estimate closer to 10% or more, just based on the amount of students who speak Chinese/ Mandarin/whatever you want to call it.
At one stage, Phnom Penh had the biggest Chinese language school outside of China, not sure if this is true anymore.
I do know some FT Chinese teachers getting around $800/month now, more than 50% increase over the last few years.

Not as much as people think, a large part of the population either WANT to be Chinese or have a great great great grandmother who is quarter Chinese so they try to claim themselves as so.

It's a question that will only be answered once DNA testing is so widespread that they capture enough of the population statistically such that they can make a determination. And even once done, what percentage would qualify anyway?
We can say that it's pretty common particularly among the urban population for there to be some Chinese ancestors hence they respect the holidays and some of the traditions. I think most people would be surprised at how many people just moved from place to place back in the old days, and no doubt there were plenty of Chinese who ended up in Cambodia and just decided to stay. I know that my wife's paternal grandmother was full Chinese who somehow ended up in rural Takeo. But you'd never have known it as she's lived her entire (long) life in Cambodia and is indistinguishable from her neighbours at this point. She married a Khmer as have all of her children and grandchildren so far other than my wife.
It's part of the mix. If one looks around Southeast Asia one can see that local people with Chinese heritage seem to do quite well in terms of forming the Elite and being among the wealthy. As do those with Vietnamese heritage. I don't think this is due to genetic disposition, more a matter of cultural and socio-economic factors. The Chinese in Asian countries tend to assimilate much more than those who are in Caucasian societies, for what should be obvious reasons.
