Overdue electricity bill
My landlord receives the power bill for our apartment and gives it to us each month. I give him the money and he pays it for us. We haven't had any issues until now.
This month I overlooked the due date by one day, so the payment was late. My landlord said a fine would be levied by the power company for the late payment. When I asked how much, he said 5 dollars.
I didn't give him any extra money as I was in a rush to get to work, but it sounds like bullshit to me. It's not so much about the money as being played for a fool.
Fact or fiction?

If you get cut off you have to pay $10 for reconnection, not sure about late fines.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I was sometimes late by a day, never paid a late fee. More than 2-3 days and your power gets cut. That's when you pay the reconnection fee and maybe late payment fee if it's been for some time.
I did have to pay a reconnection fee after my electronic payment (done on the deadline) got processed late (bank took 2 days to do it) and EDC was quick to disconnect because there were more late payments in my area.

Seriously? 2-3 days late and you're blacked out? Seems pretty harsh. Back in the home country, late payment charges don't apply until day 20 for non-payment. And they cannot cut you off in the winter. One advantage, I guess, of hailing from the north.

In my case, they were especially swift because there were a lot of late payments in my neighborhood, so that's where they started. And I live 10km from central PP.
I've paid 1 or 2 days late before and never had to pay a fine. But yes, I've heard of people getting cut off after only a couple of days (esp if the date falls on a weekend or holiday) and then there's a $10 reconnection fee.
Also, does your bill due date fall on the same day each month? If your landlord tells you that, then he's probably lying.

To clarify, I do receive the actual bill. It was due on 1st Feb, I paid the landlord and he paid the bill on 2nd Feb.
Is the fine generally receipted?

There shouldn't be a late fee in the first place. But if your bill is paid at EDC cashiers, they will keep the bottom slip and the payment date and amount will be printed on the invoice. So if there's a late fee or anything, I assume it would show on it.
I guess you should just need to keep by due dates and just watch out for your landlord's requests for cash or something.

Your Landlord is a cheapskate and wants to screw you over $10,a cheap lesson for sure. There is no late payment charge only a reconnection fee. There was no lost of power right? If so he is lying and cheap.

They give you 30 days to pay the bill so you shouldn't be late anyway. In the future you should ask the landlord to pay when he receives the bill rather than wait and risk being late.

Perhaps it was more of a don't piss me about tax? Have you ever been down to edc to pay your own bill. It's a pain in the arse if your not used to the way they do things.
I don't think I've ever spent more than a minute and a half inside the edc offices. Not my definition of pain in the arse.dv8inpp wrote:Perhaps it was more of a don't piss me about tax?
