Question; what do you call Young monks
You really dont see many in Cambodia or Thailand but you do see them all the time in Myanmar; ( not just during the morning alms walk)
They seem to be always out collecting $$ ( and yes their real as most are accompanied by an older monk an in groups)
Both girls ( wearing usually pink robes) and boys, ( dark maroon)
Have run a few searches in duck duck go but ......
does anyone know what they are called? Everywhere seems to just say young monks
Would one just refer to them as Novices?
The name bhikkhuni refers to a fully ordained Buddhist nun
Thanks

Yes, the minimum age to become a monk is 20; prior to that you call just call them novices.

Good question. There are actually tons of young monks here, often also but usually only in the countryside. Just yesterday evening I was wondering the same. I was actually in a village trying to find a place to eat (the location was given to me by others: 100m down x road), I stopped at the only house down that road as it had a light on and some desks underneath which made it look like a restaurant. When no one came around, I started walking in the nearby field as I saw some other lights around (I had my headlamp on). I called out and finally came across two guys, but then I noticed they were just kids in the saffron robes... I then saw a Pagoda and realized I was on pagoda grounds. The actual restaurant was around 800m down the road. Anyways, it actually made me wonder as well... I called him lok song, but there's surely a more appropriate term. They're all over the place in the countryside, but you don't see them too often in the city.

នេន /nein/ = novice monkLexusSchmexus wrote:Actually, just asked the new family I'm crashing with here as one of the kids has the robe and all that, and they tell me it's "lok neeng" (as in "ayng"), and once they're 20 they become "lok song" or "lok pheuk".

Burma calledIn Thai, novices are known as a “samanen” or just “nen” for short. A monk is called a “bhikkhu”. The main difference between a novice and a monk is that novices only have 10 precepts while monks have 227. If you are a male and are less than twenty years of age, then you cannot become a fully fledged monk.
But still nothing about the girls, would they be the same? Plus have not, that i recall, seen young girl monks in Thailand, Cambodia or LaosOnce as a samanera, a novice monk, 10-20 years old,,,,,The novices in Myanmar have quite an easy-going life. They only have to keep 10 precepts

In Theravada Buddhism the bhikkhuni lineage died out almost a thousand years ago and hasn't been revived. The old ladies in white you see are '10 Precept Mothers' - i.e. lay women who take those 10 lay precepts - same as the ones the novices follow. As they are the same status (actually, lower) than the young boy novices, logically it doesn't make sense for young girls to have the status of novices.
Mahayana Buddhism has many less-sexist attitudes.

I don't recall ever seeing young female monks here. The nearest thing to it would be bereaved women doing short retreats or the ubiquitous old women who help out around the pagodas mainly because there isn't much else going on. I have seen plenty of young monks, but most seem to be high school or 3rd level age. It's seems to be quite a fluid organization and people drift in and out of it.

Those women look mature. I meant young as in a comparable age to male novices.andyinasia wrote:You'd be surprised, actually.Lucky Lucan wrote:I don't recall ever seeing young female monks here.

Probably one of the most extreme acts of non-violence by a monk was the self-immolation as a protest, during the Vietnam War.Just Robbed wrote:Anything you want. They've taken vows of non violence.
