Living PP, positives and negatives?
Hello all. I am interested in what brought you here, and what you like and enjoy, but also what you dislike about living in Phnom Penh?

Came for work and stuck around. I don't love it. I don't hate it. It suits a purpose at this stage of my life, and when I get bored enough I'll move on.
The biggest positive is that it is not Shitsville.

I came for the weather, cheap cost of living, and lack of fat chicks. Reasons 2 and 3 are becoming less and less true, but at least there is no winter weather! I like not needing a car, but I don't like how dirty the city is.
I am here because it's better than jail. I am hiding from Interpol because if I go back to Florida I will be very popular with freshy prosecutors. Most of my days I spend drinking cheap booze because I can't afford anything else with my social benefit paychecks. I am fat and ugly so it is much easier to find women by just buying them. Sure, I buy an occasional cow now and then but when the girls leave me because I'm poor I can shag the cow because it reminds me of the women in Florida.
Is that the answer you were looking for?

No, not really. I hate the place, just looking for something positive in case I am missing the good stuff. I need to leave ASAP.DetroitMuscle wrote:fucking FloridaAlexandra wrote:I am here because it's better than jail. I think there's much to love about PP, but like anywhere it has it's negatives too.
Positives: Cost of living, French colonial architecture, central location to temple town and the beaches, the fact that it's an underdog, the people, the expats I meet are cool, political stability, love the diversity of food here, laid back vibe of Riverside at night, immigration, Cuban cigars, cheap taxi's and of course the beautiful women.
Negatives: The heat (getting worse), lack of live music, dicey health care, the roads, drivers, street parking, trash, difficulty and expense dealing with mail and asshole tuk tuk's.
I'm sure I'm missing a lot of both, but overall I think PP and Cambodia as a whole is great. I'm happy to be back.

Thank you for reply. I am actually impressed with the general attitude of the posters on here.
Everywhere has positives and negatives, nowhere is perfect.
I didn't start the thread with any intention to moan, but today I seemed to crack with it all. Been here a while, and feel it's really not for me. but I don't like to make hasty decisions.
I am OAP now, I cannot afford to live in my own country, I would be living like a pauper, I don't want that. I also have work here, and that is a plus. I like to work. Spending days with nothing to do is awful.
That is the reason I am stuck here. There are places I like better, but it's the work that is keeping me here, despite not liking it.
As to live music, I went into Oscars last night, st 104. They have refurbished the top floor, and a good band there. Two Westerners, lead guitar, and very good vocals and a drummer. Two Khmer on Bass and keyboard.
The lack of live music a problem for me too, but this band was good.
They have a lot of bands advertised for next month, but doubt they will all be this good.
Cost of living, yes, ease of visas, yes.
The French colonial buildings are lovely, but due to the general squalor of the place, the filth overwhelms everything.
Food, I eat when I am hungry, I seem a rarity, as most mention food high up as important. Advantage is I am not fat, and pretty fit at 66.
The riverside area is the best bit, and does look good. But there is nothing else.
Never had a problem with Tuk Tuk or motorbike taxi drivers. Tell them where I want to go, agree a price, get there, pay, end of story, so I don't know.
I don't like the constant, you want weed, heroin, or whatever stupid drugs they have. I don't want free than you. Worse is ''you want lady small, lady original''.
I assume underage, again, I don't want and find such practices repulsive. I don't know if they are on entrapment or real, either way, I just don't even answer.
If I get one of those, I avoid after.
Negative is the dirt, the smell, the pollution, the traffic.
Heat, yea, it's too hot, I never complain about that, I don't like the ice and snow, bitter cold of my country, so I rate that as a positive, not a negative.
I find the people in the main OK, can get on with the Khmer easy.
Health care, never needed any, how long that will last I don't know, so no experience. Everyone seems to go to Thailand.
Beautiful women? Is there some special place where they are all hidden? I see very few. The best lookers seem to be in the bars, but they never go. Only the unattractive ones will.
I admit I will pay for what I need if possible. I have no wife or girlfriend to bother, just I find it virtually impossible to even score when I have cash in hand, but I am 66.
So if I can't score when I am paying there is no chance of a girlfriend. I must be really ugly I suppose.
Oh, last note on music, dreadful Hip Hop drives me away from most establishments, I really hate that stuff. But I think that rubbish is everywhere in every country.

I hear you, the place can be wearing at times and after a while it loses much of it's "craziness" appeal. However I still like it and feel very much at home here. It feels like a different world from when I arrived here first, but that's not just the place. I was quite a bit younger when I rocked up first, footloose and fancy free. Now I'm a parent, so my priorities have changed somewhat.
I remember one specific twat driver around Riverside/ 142 (?) who constantly did that "want young girl" spiel, I wanted to smack him in the teeth a couple of times. I'd imagine he's the source of a whole lot of tourists coming away from here feeling disgusted.lostintime wrote: Never had a problem with Tuk Tuk or motorbike taxi drivers. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
