Cambodian-American Michael Vannak Khem Mislewicz got 78 months and $195,000 in fines and restitution.
Too lenient? too harsh? Comments?

Fat Leonard sounds like a great character. He'll probably wash-up in Phnon Penh when he gets out.

Sure, nothink like it has happened before. Fat Leonard corrupted the poor innocent sailors!“Mr. Francis’s conduct has passed from being merely exceptional to being the stuff of history and legend.”

Did you read the article?LTO wrote:6-7 years for a commanding officer involved in what amounts to espionage doesn't sound too bad. Could have been worse I think.
Before his sentencing, I assumed that Cambodian-American Michael Vannak Khem Mislewicz was going to get a minimum of 20 years, which I think he deserves.LTO wrote:6-7 years for a commanding officer involved in what amounts to espionage doesn't sound too bad. Could have been worse I think.
Pleading guilty would have helped but to this extent?
Apparently, his wife has filed for divorce. Who would want to be known as the wife and children (if any) of a traitor?
According to the article, Michael Vannak Khem Mislewicz was into Japanese prostitutes.
Upon his release from prison, if he cannot get a proper civilian job in the States, he can always come and teach English in his country of birth. From what I hear, Vietnamese whores provide even better service for a much lower price and he would feel right at home in a country where corruption and impunity are part of life.

Hell, he'd be the head of the Navy here in a heartbeat. Actually knows what he's doing AND is on the take. Perfect combination.Cambodian wrote:Before his sentencing, I assumed that Cambodian-American Michael Vannak Khem Mislewicz was going to get a minimum of 20 years, which I think he deserves.LTO wrote:6-7 years for a commanding officer involved in what amounts to espionage doesn't sound too bad. He leaked military secrets to a foreign based company and manipulated military resourses at their request. He is lucky this information was not passed on to more hostile foreign interests, and that the goverment decided to interpret his transgressions as corruption and not espionage.
Edit: Edited to add the word 'company'
He may have to settle for Khmer whores these days. On my observation they dominate the market now.Cambodian wrote:Upon his release from prison, if he cannot get a proper civilian job in the States, he can always come and teach English in his country of birth. Being competent would disqualify him from any government or Navy job. With no connections, teaching English would be his best bet.Jacked Camry wrote:Hell, he'd be the head of the Navy here in a heartbeat. Actually knows what he's doing AND is on the take. Perfect combination.
How can they be sure that some of that information has not been passed on to hostile foreign interests? This Malaysian seems capable of pimping his own mother.LTO wrote:He leaked military secrets to a foreign based and manipulated military resourses at their request. In Cambodia, Khmer prostitutes have always outnumbered Vietnamese prostitutes, I think.
In case the guy thinks the Khmer ones lack certain skills, he can always sell some of the U.S. Navy secrets to the Chinese and use the money to make frequent trips to Vietnam.

Granted. I'm not sure that they can, but I figure if there was any hint of it the Americans would have gone harder on him. But I agree it was a real risk, and I wonder how much that was taken into account when sentencing him. Could have been a lot worse for him.
