Tides have turned
For those of us that are interested in Mother Nature ...The Tonle Bassac river visibly turned two days ago and has been steadily rising by the hour. I know it's "yeah what ever" to many, but this event only happens in a few places in the world. Spending many years living on a boat and at sea it's truly amazing - one of the wonders of the world.
Might not mean much to old mate swilling beers at Paddy Rice bar or Candy bar, but for many Khmers and the aquatic environment of Cambodia, this is a big event. And for me too...can't say I have ever seen a river stop and flow the other way without human intervention.

Don't mention the Giant Panda in the room.

I've never witnessed it. There must be a critical mass, a huge strain and then just a moment when the mass reverses.
Be fascinated to watch it in time lapse photography.

Sure, there is no big incline to it so it's just going to rise and get mixed up in the middle over a huge stretch before there is any discernible change in direction.horace wrote:From years of observations, it doesn't just turn, it happens over a few weeks.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

RobW, I suspect you might be underwhelmed if you were anticipating a big event and water sloshing around.RobW wrote:I've never witnessed it. There must be a critical mass, a huge strain and then just a moment when the mass reverses.

The flow of the Tonle Sap channel essentially slows down as it gets 'backed up' by the Mekong, until there is no perceptible flow (= it's still) for a fair old while (= not especially gripping viewing), and then water gradually gets 'pushed upstream' up the Tonle Sap Sap by the (over)flow from the Mekong. That 'upstream flow' of the TS channel gradually increases, so long as the Mekong flow overrides the gradient of the TS channel flow. (Once the Mekong flow subsides sufficiently, the TS channel flow 'follows gravity' and flow returns to a downstream direction, i.e. the 2nd reversal per year that Alexandra mentions.)
I suspect, RobW, you have watched this process happening whilst sat on the riverside, but it's in slo-mo.
In effect, it's a bit like a very, very slow see-saw.

Honest question. What is the Cham peninsula?

I normally believe everything Marvin says, when it comes to nature, but it's quite late and I can't sleep.
What you describe sounds very much like my meetings with your mother.

Thanks for posting this Marvin,it was great news when the other day our cruise guide in pp told me that the Tonle Sap river had began flowing north into the Tonle Sap lake, the lake itself was at a very low level this year, lower than i have ever seen it in all the years i been here,i was out on the lake last week when i come across a sunken riverboats hull, the locals told me she sank years ago and was once used to ferry passengers and cargo up from pp to SR,i went out again yesterday and she is hidden again under water,( next year i will recover her). we have another large riverboat dry docked ( means beached here) in SR just now waiting for the lake to raise to re float her after her hull was repaired and heaps of make up applied:)as i am out at the boats on the lake everyday the lake can raise quickly once the Tonle Sap river changes direction, yesterday she had raisen half a mtr in just 24 hours and expect she will be another half mtr higher when i head out there in a few hours time, when you think about the size of the lake we are taking huge volumes of water,
