Pet Mynah bird
Does anyone know where you can buy a pet Mynah bird? I was talking with a old Khmer guy who has one he said he bought it out near the airport. Couldnt get much more info than that from him...doesn't know the address etc etc. According to him they are not always there and you just need to keep going there. Anyone know where he is talking about? Or where else you could buy one. He payed 150$ for his.
Any info would be appreciated.

You sometimes see a couple of people with cages on the north side of Russian Federation opposite the Prime Minister's office, but they might have parakeets or something. There used to be a few people selling birds around Wat Phnom. It's illegal to sell them.
They are pretty dirty as they mostly eat fruit and insects. I had one a long time ago and it used to squirt crap out at an angle and it would get all over the walls.

Illegal...didn't know that, maybe that's why old bong was being a bit cagey... They must be wild caught then.Lucky Lucan wrote:You sometimes see a couple of people with cages on the north side of Russian Federation opposite the Prime Minister's office. They are wild caught. It is a Hill Myna and it is disappearing at a rapid rate, not least at all because of the pet trade. Anyway, I am not sure you would want one in your house, they have a call that carries a good kilometer...

Some Chinese guy was chasing one of these Mynahs round on monivong the other night. Very tame, but was playing silly buggers and leading his cager on a chase.

Victor Chow used to carry one around in a cage in Prey Sar.

It is what it is Violet...a real question about a real pet for my real daughter, in the Question & Answer forum. If you don't have any useful information, don't comment.
End of story...as you were.

Yesterday morning just outside our compound where there's a small informal street market, I was driving along and was surprised to see what I'm fairly sure was a golden eagle in the open boot of a Lexus. It was a beautiful creature, filled the boot of this smaller model Lexus SUV. It looked like its 's 'owner' was about to remove her from the car as I drove past.
I find it surprising that in our enlightened age, any one would want to keep a bird of any kind in a cage.

Keeping an eagle in a cage is crazy, unless it was just being transported. I think to keep any bird you should at least have a decent flight or aviary. I used to keep a whole lot of birds/ animals when I was younger and bred and sold quite a few. I'm against keeping most birds or animals now unless it's for a conservation purpose.
Getting past that, their are always budgies, lovebirds and canaries or zebra finches/ munias for sale. The first two can be a bit nippy.
One other point to consider is where this bird is going to live? My family have a Congo Gray for about 25 years now. That's always been kept indoors in a giant cage and can be let out a bit, but the thing has always made a mess, seeds, water and dust from feathers/ droppings end up everywhere. It's the same for any birds, and the dust is hazardous, so you should never keep a birdcage in close proximity to where you are sleeping or generally living. You can't just put a cage out on a balcony either, unless it has the right shelter, shade and ventilation.
