Apparently it was the food the monks were given by the locals when they went on their daily rounds that caused the food poisoning. And some of the locals deliberately gave them bad food. The monks are up in alms about it.

Pickles Poison the Priesthood
Police believe a contaminated batch of pickles is to blame after 38 monks fell ill in Kampong Cham province yesterday.
After eating their usual lunchtime meal at the Baray pagoda in Srey Santhor district, 38 of the more than 70 monks who live there plus two villagers complained of vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pains, deputy district police chief Hong Mao told Khmer Times.
“We suspect they were poisoned from a pickle mustard greens,” said Mr. Mao. “They are better now after the health officials treated them carefully.”
He explained that a soup made from the pickled vegetables had been prepared by local villagers, who made food for the monks each day. He said that the Health Ministry often broadcasts warnings to villagers to be careful of how they prepare and store food.
Kim Sourphirun, director of the provincial health department, said despite there being many dishes that were served during the lunch, only the pickles were suspected.
“After we checked the food that the monks ate, we suspected only the pickle mustard greens that poisoned the monks,” he said, adding that due to the remote location of the pagoda, health officials had traveled there to treat the monks.
In December, five people died and eight more were hospitalized in Kratie province after eating poisoned dog meat, while nearly 100 people in Takeo province became ill in February after eating contaminated soup during a religious ceremony.
