Not going to be able to see it. Who was it? Was it king Jayavarman II who put all the johnsons in the river? Or Burger King? You should put the answer in a spoiler so others won't be upset. Thanks!aem wrote:Alliance Francais is screening this today but I was concerned that tickets will sell out so I did a little research an voila. it is free to watch until the end of the weekend at http://www.themanwhobuiltcambodia.com

Synopsis:
The Man Who Built Cambodia is a narrative documentary exploring the life of Vann Molyvann, an architect whose work came to represent a new identity for a country emerging from independence, and whose incredible story encompasses Cambodia’s turbulent journey as a modern nation.
In Cambodia’s post-independence period, Molyvann had been at the centre of a renaissance, developing a distinctive architectural style, New Khmer Architecture, that completely changed the face of Cambodia. Then in 1970, at his creative peak, Cambodia’s political landscape disintegrates, forcing him to flee as the Khmer Rouge plunges the country into genocide and civil war. Finally returning in the 1990s, Molyvann finds a different country than the one he had left. He’s marginalized from public life and many of his works are destroyed or neglected.
Today, like many countries is Asia, Cambodia is developing rapidly and unevenly. Nearly 90, the film follows Vann Molyvann as he reflects on the country he’s put so much of himself into.
Narrated by Academy Award™ nominee Matt Dillon, at the heart of The Man Who Built Cambodia A is Vann Molyvann’s lifelong engagement with the identity of the Khmer people, and his attempt to create a unique architectural style that gives modern expression to that identity.
Christopher Rompré
Christopher Rompré is a Canadian filmmaker based in Phnom Penh. The Man Who Built Cambodia is his first narrative documentary, built on nearly a decade of experience writing and directing in broadcast journalism and humanitarian filmmaking. He’s also worked as a cinematographer on a variety of projects including acclaimed filmmaker Kalyanee Mam’s The Fight for Areng Valley (2014).

It would be good if some of VM's unbuilt buildings could be built now that the country is so much richer - and if those
neglected or demolished could be rebuilt absolutely new elsewhere

VM was Sihanouk's man...no way HE would ever allow a rebirth of VM's works...thus his stuff wrecked or allowed to fall into ruin...to the regime, he represents everything they hate about the old order. Also, back in the 90s...how shall I put it...um...VM is a brilliant man, but he lacked politic and lorded over Apsara in a way that made the new order bristle. He was used to answering to only one man, and that was Sihanouk. HE could not tolerate that, as he had bigger fish to fry at the time.
