Immigration Border not allowing departure
Immigration Border not allowing departure
Hello,
I am looking from some help here.
Today I was supposed to go to Thailand, however at the PoiPet Border I ran into an issue.
They said that I was missing stamps of entering Cambodia and they could not let me leave.
As you will see in the picture below I previously have left Cambodia for Thailand on the Nov 11th.
On Nov 24th I left for Laos. And then on Nov 28th I returned to Cambodia.
What they are telling me is that I should have a stamp saying that I entered Cambodia on Nov 28th. Though, I do not have this.
When crossing from Laos to Cambodia I took a bus, at the border we all handed over our passports to one of the gentleman on the bus and he took them to immigration, whom handed me my passport back as I entered Cambodia. At this time I did not check for a stamp, because why would I? (Also fyi I do not have my bus receipt..why would i keep that, i bought it from a stand and not online...)
In this image below you will see where in October I extended my Ordinary Visa (Business Visa) so I do have my Visa. So to me it seems that I do not need this stamp they say I do, but I am unsure about that...
I called the U.S. Embassy, though it sounded like I was speaking with a Cambodian Native, and they were unsure what to do, but advised that I return to the border to sort it out....which I am hesitant to do as I think they will just extort me for money or take me to jail... not to mention it will take time and money just to get there, as well.
Anyone ever hear of this before or have any input?
If I cannot come to a solution today I will head to the U.S. Embassy to see how they can help me.
Thank You.

They are correct that you do officially need an entry stamp because, without it, they could argue that you have entered the country illegally. Having a valid visa is irrelevant.
I'm curious as to why they let you go . . what did they say?
Whatever happens, I suspect it's going to cost you something.

Yes this is what they were arguing...
I assume they let me go because they sensed my truthfulness... and probably are aware I am being extorted...
I am going to have to pay one way or another I suspect as well, but I don't have a lot of cash so I am worried if I go to the Laos Border and I can't afford their price they will do away with me.
I am currently checking with a local friend of a tourist shop to see if I can get it taken care of locally...
I think it's wise to try to resolve this in Phnom Penh, rather than Poipet. Lucky Lucky might be able to come up with a solution.

Well you wouldn't be in this mess if you had bothered checking.traviz440 wrote: At this time I did not check for a stamp, because why would I?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

True, but you suspect that when you give your passport to an immigration officer and they let you enter the country that they have given you your stamp.....
Lesson learned.
I had exactly the same issue about 5 years ago. No entry stamp...
I went to Pailin and tried to get stamped out, but they weren't having it, not even for a crisp green note, they told me to go Poipet.
So, I go Poipet and try to get stamped out again, the guy leafs thru my passport several times, calls a supervisor, who calls someone in uniform with an important looking hat. They invite me into a small room and hat guy screams at me for a couple of minutes, whilst I, all the time somtao and apologize for what must have been a mistake.
Hat dude asks me to write down my address, I was staying in BTB at the time, and my landlord was a nice guy, but rather shady entrepreneur with a big cross-border operation between Aran-Poipet-BTB. I wrote his name in big letters and then an approximate address. Whether the Hat recognized the name, or just got bored shouting at me, I don't know, but he took me out to the immigration queue, forced us past the tourists in line and spoke to the stamping guy.
Stamping guy behind the glass then rolled his rubber stamp back to the date I had been stamped out of Thailand last time, took another stamp saying CANCELLED and stamped that over that stamp. Then rolled the date stamp back to that days date and stamped me again. Then gave me back my passport.
Hat dude escorted me out into the street and said 'You very lucky, next time, 1 day, $5' shook me by the hand as I thanked him and let me on my way without a single Riel being asked for or given. I could have kissed him.
I then drove on to SR and spent the unspent allocated bribe money on a massage girl who gave me a dose.

My first stop would be the immigration guys beside the airport.
Then, if no luck, as scobienz suggested go to tourist company with connections in immigration like Lucky Lucky and see what they say.
You have the exit stamp from Laos so your story stands up.

Yes, Thank You this is what I was looking for. It seems you were very lucky as well as he could have asked for a lot more or made even moreso of a deal about it...
Chances are the immigration boys by the airport wouldn't let him go very far. The immigration holding cell is right there.

I agree with KH and Scobienz that you should try to resolve it at the main immigration office in Phnom Penh by the airport.Khmerhamster wrote:My first stop would be the immigration guys beside the airport.

First thing I do before leaving the immigration desk anywhere is to check the visa and or stamp, common fucking sense in my opinion.
Follow the advice given, tdy the immigration department opposite PIA, if that doesn't work then try an agent. Good luck!
