Seven girls aged from seven to 13 drowned in a lake in Sihanoukville’s Bey commune on Tuesday morning when the boat they were riding in along with two other two girls and one boy sank, according to the local police.
The Sihanoukville deputy police chief who asked not to be named said that when a neighbor saw the accident, they came to their aid, adding that two were rescued while the other seven were later pronounced dead at the provincial hospital.
“It happened at about 9:30am. They went to the lake alone. There were nine of them, but only two could be rescued,” he said.
After the drowning, they were sent to the Preah Sihanouk provincial referral hospital. Seven were officially pronounced dead, while the two were staying in the hospital, he said.
They were neighbors who lived near the scene of the accident and they went and play in the water, he added.
However, Bey commune police chief Khieu Vantha said there were actually 10 children, but a boy was able to swim to dry land.
“They were riding the boat in Prek Tup lake but the boat sank, so there were 10 children. One was a boy and nine were girls. Seven girls died, while the boy could swim, and the other two girls were rescued and taken to the provincial hospital,” he said.

I wonder how many would have been saved if a single villager knew CPR?

Horrible.

A lot of parents who live by the water are afraid to let their kids learn how to swim. More common that I thought.

I have no proof to back it up. I think one of the main reasons why some locals are poor swimmers or dont know at all is because of the deep held belief in water ghost, it is called Cherng Kop in Khmer where they have to take the lives from the livings so they can move onto a different realm.
EVERYONE BOW DOWN TO HIS MAJESTIES phat kunthea™
