This is interesting.
Despite winning the recent commune elections, HE is still on the warpath, yesterday repeating his claim that 100-200 people might need to be 'eliminated' to protect the peace. In case there is any confusion as to what 'eliminated' might mean, he clarified it thus: "If you still make insults and threats to kill, prepare your coffins."
Now while it could argued that this is all rhetoric, it will be interesting to see what response the international community makes to this. It takes things to an entirely different stage.
What I found most interesting in his speech is comments about the family:
“There is an attempt to destroy the Hun family. The Hun family is not the family for you to attack for fun,” he said, asking his three sons to stand behind him.
Lieutenant General Hun Manet, the oldest, heads the Defense Ministry’s counterterrorism department and is deputy commander of his father’s personal bodyguard unit. Major General Hun Manith, the prime minister’s second son, is deputy commander of the military’s powerful intelligence unit. Both came wearing their own military uniforms. Hun Many, the prime minister’s youngest, is a National Assembly lawmaker for his father’s ruling CPP.
“The Hun family is the family that shares your sorrows and the happiness of the Cambodian people,” Mr. Hun Sen said. “The Hun family does not own a monopoly on this country. The Hun family ensures the protection of the country’s peace. Please don’t incite to foment turmoil.”
That's the first time I've seen him reference the role of the family in the country's future stability, rather than the CPP. Is this the clearest sign yet that he sees a North Korean Kim family dynasty as the natural ruling elite in Cambodia for generations to come?

It's been alluded to in the past and I have personally found him to be increasingly senile the older he gets. By that I mean he's been losing touch with the people and his forgetting his sly ways of the past and becoming increasingly belligerent, provocative and open in his dealings with the opposition and anyone he thinks might be ever so slightly against him. Basically he's becoming paranoid, which is a common trait amongst strongmen and dictators everywhere. I think his sons are more level headed than he is and might see where the country is actually headed. At this point I think he actually knows his days will be numbered one way or another, but he's trying to preserve his legacy and what his family has "accumulated". He fears for the future, so he's trying to consolidate his power even more by any means necessary.
The sooner he hands over the reigns to manet, the better.
Obviously it's not perfect, but the old man really is starting to lose his shit, and at least #1 son is fairly smart, Western educated and has the support of the elite.
Before next year would be ideal, for the country and party I'm, and I'm pretty confident most loyalists are rolling their eyes Everytime the old coot comes out with his daily dose of crazy.

This is the only way I see the country not heading towards a civil war.
Either CPP under Manet evolves into a more attractive party for youth and win the next election or the CNRP take the next election and the new CPP chapter respond politically and not violently.
Hun Manet seems the perfect leader - graduated from West Point and has a BA and two PhD's from western universities and does not seem to own any of these household named companies in Cambodia, but his wife does.
I vote Samdech Hun Manet!!!!

He can't just hand over the reigns, unless he decides to sack the Senate, National Assembly, and most of his party first.pedros wrote:The sooner he hands over the reigns to manet, the better.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I'm sure it could go something like this:
HE: Dang, I'm tired of saving this country from civil war, maybe it's time I took it easier.
CPP: (Feigned shock): Oh no, great leader, what will we do with out you at the helm?
HE: Why don't you all vote democratically for Manet to be the new leader of the party and thus ensure my lineage continue to guide the nation?
CPP: Wonderful idea boss!
National Assembly: Here's a gold watch and a carriage clock!
The Senate: And here's some golf clubs!
Heng Samrin: Come on, I'll get your coat.
