Are the Chinese taking over Sihanoukville?

Here is the place to post any simple or complex questions you may have about any aspect of life in Cambodia and beyond without fear of being told 'That question has been asked 100 times before.'

Are the Chinese taking over Sihanoukville?

Postby gavinmac » Sun Jul 16, 2017 11:32 pm

I haven't been to Sihanoukville in twelve years. But I'm reading a lot of people on Facebook groups saying that the Chinese are taking over and the Westerners are moving to Kampot.

I know LaudJohn sublease Aqua Resort to the Chinese for employee housing, now I'm reading more reports of Westerners saying they are getting kicked out of their apartments because entire apartment blocks are being sold or rented to Chinese companies or groups.

What's going on down there?

Expats are reporting that they are being kicked out of their apartments on two weeks' notice, or even one days' notice, and even if they have long term leases.

Not just westerners it;s screwing the locals as well, driving up rental costs & it's not providing employment as the Chinese are bringing in their own workers.

You are using the wrong tense.

They have taken over.

Jamies list is way too short.

I came back a couple of weeks ago after 6 weeks away and almost did not recognise the place.

I've heard they rent out LJ by the hour!

Where the old Happy Burger used to be they've rented most of the blocks of apartments down that road. Two couples I know have this week told to vacate. They seem to be targeting the sub $200 apartments.
Try finding one in SHV now!

I was told by a Chinese businessman that this is just the start. You ain't seen nothing yet! :-o

If it keeps raining (three days now) we will all have washed into the sea anyway.

t'was always going to happen somewhere here wasn't it? China doesn't give money for nothing.

this is an interesting read

https://www.ft.com/content/23968248-43a ... d?mhq5j=e2
...

An investigation by the Financial Times reveals the favoured treatment that Chinese companies have won from Cambodia’s leadership, resulting in the award of land that far exceeded legal size limits, the apparent overriding of a state decree for the benefit of a Chinese investor and official support against the protests of dispossessed farmers.

...

In the 20 years from 1992, when the west started to engage in building democracy in Cambodia, donor nations delivered some $12bn in loans and grants — a large portion of which was never spent on development but went instead to pay the salaries of expensive consultants, according to Sebastian Strangio, author of HE’s Cambodia.

By contrast, China invested $9.6bn in the decade to 2013; and about a further $13bn is yet to come, according to the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace, a think-tank.

Victory beach shacks no more. Orchidee Guesthouse RIP. Sunday GH RIP.

Alot of these places seem to get taken over and filled full of bunk beds for casino staff??
I bet bunk bed manufacturers are doing well.

That Pharoah KTV place opposite the Square looks to have been gutted out and is having some massive extension put on the front, done in a hurry. KTV to Casino??

It's an invasion!!!. Is Sam Rainsy part Chinese?

Why the sudden influx in the last few months? I hear it has something to do with online casinos?

why would they need to be here for 'online' casinos?

speaking of ... there are some attractive Russian women on those online casinos, not that I gamble and not that I look for attractive Russian women online, but sometimes they just cross my path.

Thats not true and it's only a whisper.
