Another Cynome Post...

Postby Cynome » Sun Aug 13, 2017 7:42 pm

So,

While I have become adjusted to everything here so far(for the most part)... There are some things that have been on my mind lately, maybe you have some input? Is it really a smart idea to display wealth here? Like, spending money constantly and dressing nice... I've been holding back for awhile because I think on some level it makes you a target. With the constant phone snatching and other theft it doesn't seem to be too bright of an idea. Is moderation the key?

But seriously... I wonder if spending money here will be beneficial in the long run... People watch everything... What are your thoughts?

Spend it on other people and you'll have friends for life ;) Or at least until you stop spending money.

What do you mean? That's a weird question.

Spend money on what? An expensive car, big dinners, a bling watch? Cambodians obviously value outwardly showing wealth (watch, car, gold chain, diamond ring), and expats just live their lives however they see fit. On the forum there's some sort of hatred for anyone who talks about spending money more than a TRFLer earns, but in real life it's like anywhere else. Act like a rich prick and people will treat you like one; but don't be an ass and you'll be fine.

Also, if you want to do real business with Asian businessmen, you'll need to play the part as well (spend on dinners, dress well, etc).

Low key is always good in any country, but especially in poor countries. Criminals/cons/thieves are usually good at measuring you up, after a while they will notice that You seem to know Your way around the place and then they will probably look for easier targets. Another good way is to look like someone whose disappearance will be noticed. Look at how professionals or embassy staff dress. Dark trousers, short sleeve shirt and closed leather shoes are never wrong, it signals that You work in an office and might be of some importance. The bad people will usually look for other targets. But never show anything of course. Carry a waist pack or whatever, it signals that You are aware of the risk and makes You a less preferred target. Keep small money in an outside pocket but never show big money, credit cards or an expensive phone in public unless necessary. Buy an iPhone 6, new enough to fit into You status image but now something really desirable. And travel by SUV, this is what the classy people do. Don't buy luxury goods in brand stores.

Boring life, I know, but you wanted some input. Remember the trick is to see danger before danger sees You. Keep alert at all times and avoid crowds. Every person you meet is basically a robber waiting to come out as his true self. And keep moving, don't loiter. When in rough areas I always walk at a brisk pace, makes it more difficult for them to sneak up on You unnoticed and also it signals that You are aware of the situation.

to summarize: Wear decent clothes, no open shoes. No tats or motifs. Don't show wallets or wads of money. Try to move by car. Don't loiter. Always walk at a brisk pace and look as if You know where You are even if You don't.

And remember, if hit, stay calm, don't resist and call Your insurance company. You will usually fare badly against a crew of meth stoned guys with foot long beards and AK's.

Good post Dahon. I think you need to look smart enough not to attract derision, but showing bling like some locals do - no way. By bling I mean thick gold chains and rings full of gems and diamonds. You could wander around here for decades with a scratched-up Rolex that's worth $10,000 and nobody would notice or care. Wave a $100 phone around and it could be gone in no time.
We all gotta duck..............when the shit hits the fan.

Do you feel the need to display your wealth and social status here? If yes, for what purpose?
Do you just want to look nice and appealing to other people?

Thieves and conpeople will target you if 1) they perceive that you have anything they can rob and 2) they have a high chance of easily robbing you. Just don't look like this would be an easy 1) and 2).

Is it me or did this post go from serious advice to non serious to mocking the OP to sarcasm and back to mocking the OP?
