Anything interesting in Kampong chnang town, Kampong leaeng?

Postby jackrossi » Wed Sep 13, 2017 5:33 pm

I am on a boat to that area, the trip is a bit sudden and unexpected so I haven't planned anything.
Mostly I am going to check out some mildly interesting land plots.
Any suggestions on how to best spend 2 days there?

Kompong Kleang used to be verrry nice. They've now upgraded the road (paved) and building a new one towards Kompong Thom. There are actually many attractions near KC, but only nice if you have your own wheels (temples, hills, airport, KR bunker etc).

I think Kampong Khleang is further up the Tonle Sap?

Kampong Leaeng over the river from Kampong Chhnang has some ancient Angkor style temples near the hills there - there's a bit of a ring road if I recall (sorry not been since 2006) that hits three of them - but frankly a bit underwhelming; but better than just sitting in KC itself - I went out for the day when we were visiting family there, certainly better to get out in the sticks & a bit of fresh air.

Sorry, I wrote Kompong Kleang (a village in Siem Riep) but I was definitely talking about Kompong Leang in Chnang.

i find Kompong Chhnang(port of pottery) a nice relaxing place, grab a tuk tuk and head out into the villages and check out the pottery, the country will be nice and green this time of the year, last time a was there we got heaps of nice pineapples for like 10 for $1,took heaps of them on the boat to Siem Reap.interesting also is a stop at one of the 100s of brick making places on the side of the road:)

The Chinese-built Khmer Rouge airport just north of town is pretty cool, as are the bunkers in the hills nearby, but they will be flooded this time of year.

Perhaps I'm repeating the link but, per the (Khmer) people I saw it with, the runway was to be used by China to attach Vietnam, and the Chinese workers who constructed it were then killed to ensure that it remained a secret. Kinda cute.

The workers were Cambodian, not Chinese. As far as I know, China supplied the military advisors and technical expertise, while Cambodian labourers were used. In the case of the hidden cave bunkers, labour was definitely executed afterwards. Only a few known survivors (I say a few, but I was told of only one, who now lives in Takeo and starts crying whenever it's mentioned). Labourers came from all over, not from the surrounding areas.
