Alt. routes between SR and PP?

Postby seidier » Sat Dec 16, 2017 1:10 pm

I'm heading up to Siem Reap in a few weeks and thought for the hell of it I'd make the trip by moto. A few years ago I drove down to SHV just gunning it along National Road #4 on a 50cc scooter which, in addition to requiring frequent dives into the ditch to give way to idiots, left little to be desired in terms of scenery. This time around, if the option is available, I'd rather add some miles to my trip if it means a more relaxed journey.

I'm on a Honda Wave this time, so slightly bigger bike (100cc) but still not great for extended off-roading.

Can anyone recommend an alternative route to NR #6?

Thanks.

so the obvious alternative would be NR#5 but you would need a committed suicide wish to attempt it on a moto. you got vast amounts of trucks, motos and buses hurtling down a country lane with school children walking and bicycling to school in many parts along the same country road. made me shiver just to see it. but battambong attracts quite a few barang tourists perhaps for its quite peaceful ambience in comparison to traffic jammed pp

do yourself a favour, sr has an airport use it. battambong has an airport too but i currently cant see any scheduled flights for it online

Put your bike on a boat & relax the whole way while taking in the Tonle Sap view.

also seemed to be boats from battambong to siem reip, dont know if that boat would take motos or not. may also be a boat from pursat region or there abouts not real sure on that one though

bb-sr ferries go from around this area

that may be even one pictured. ask around there they will be able to point you in the right direction

NR5 is fine, though not terribly exciting scenery. Easy to ride, certainly much better than NR4 for motos. The leg from Battambang to Sisophon is in worse condition, but very scenic.

If you want a really nice scenic 2/3 day trip, ride PP to the boats at Chhnok Tru in Kampong Chhnang https://goo.gl/maps/g8BvSdpkKRx, hitch a ride to Kampong Thom town, sleep, then head north to Krong Preah Vihear then east to SR via Koh Ker, Kulen and Bantei Srei

pp to Kampong Chhnang has a decent road. Kampong Chhnang to battambong is not as carefree, you'd need your wits about you, sharply on the look out constantly for hours.

Could be said of all roads here, National or otherwise.

Riding without your wits inevitably leads to problems. Break often, keep hydrated, take a nap or whatever, but mainly enjoy the journey. Going hammer and tongs to any destination kind of defeats the purpose and enjoyment of riding imo.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

Obviously I'm eyeing NR5, but other than a bridge on Highway 61 pretty close from PP, I don't see a means of crossing over to NR6 and I don't want to swing all the way out to Battambang.

Is there an artery somewhere between Kampong Chhnang city (or any other point west of the Tonle Sap) and NR6? A ferry would be okay if it dropped me off on paved roads.

am of the impression that its this place https://www.google.com.kh/maps/@12.7874 ... a=!3m1!1e3
that has the boats across. not sure you would have to make enquiries closer to the place. also check if they transport moto. havent been there myself

The link in my post is the port to hitch a bost ride. There are no bridges. Boat ride across the lake and up the Stueng Saen to Kampong Thom takes approx 4 hours.

I paid $20 for 2 people and an FTR (2013 rates, might have gone up) from Kampong Thom town to that port, but I don't see why it would be any different going the reverse journey. Get there early morning and ask around.

National road 6 is fine now. By passes around skun and Kampong Thom make it faster.

Alternative.up nr5.to svay sisophon is silly.

Rte 6 all the way.
