Passports (and Purse) stolen
Passports (and Purse) stolen
Hi - I am a US citizen traveling with a Moroccan citizen and my bag with our passports was snatched last night in Phnom Penh. Any advice on trying to get the passports back? We were hoping they would take the cash and throw the bag and passports away. Maybe some forums to post on or any tips. Thanks in advance.

Passports are not useful to thieves here.jfradono wrote:Hi - I am a US citizen traveling with a Moroccan citizen and my bag with our passports was snatched last night in Phnom Penh. Most likely they’ll be chucked away when the thieves examine the bag contents.
You might be lucky and they will turn up in a few days - just keep an eye on expat forums, this one, the other one and several Facebook pages.
You shouldn’t expect to get them back though, you should immediately start the process of getting replacements.
It’s a pain in the ass - sorry you have to go through it.
Good luck.
Spread the word among tuk tuk drivers in the vicinity where the bag was snatched that a sizable reward for the passports is offered. Measure your pain and hassle in $$. That should then be the right amount. Good luck.

I wonder how a Moroccan gets a new passport in Cambodia.
People shouldn’t be out and about at night with their passports in a purse. Check into hotel, put passport in the in room safe until you check out.

Do you actually carry a copy of it around? I just have a PDF on my phone and access to a copy via email. How often has having a copy ever helped?gavinmac wrote:No even in non-shithole countries I keep the passport in the safe at all times and just carry a copy of it around
I will risk to assume that paper copies get stolen less often than phones with a pdf on thenMiguelito wrote:Do you actually carry a copy of it around? I had to leave my copy with a security guard once to access the tomb of Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza.
I sometimes hand it to front desk clerks when I lock myself out of my room and need a new key made.
I’ve handed it to travel agents booking plane tickets for me.
It’s easier than unlocking your phone, handing that to someone, etc.
Also if you’re in a moto accident you might want someone to be able to ID you and your phone may be the first thing stolen off your unconscious body.

A copy comes in handy quite a bit actually, also, if you get injured you have an ID on you.Miguelito wrote:Do you actually carry a copy of it around?
