The Art Bar

Postby Miguelito » Tue Jan 23, 2018 3:34 pm

A new sip-and-paint shop has opened in Phnom Penh, and seems to be quite popular. Check on the new Front Page review:

The Art Bar – Something New to Check Out

Edit: A message from The Art Bar: "Thanks for the great write up! I'd like to extend an offer to all readers a 20% discount to check us out. Just mention Khmer440 when booking."

You've lost me on that first photo. Dibs on the green shirt lass, she looks cute. I might have forgotten to mention her I am a famous well known foreign painter who could teach her a trick or two during some private lessons.

How's the wine?

The wife and I are visiting Cambodia right now. I saw this place yesterday. Stopped in there and low and behold, I saw our ol friend RiceCakes in there. He was completely pissed and while everyone was trying their best at painting something interesting, I noticed RiceCakes just had a bunch of crude looking penises painted on his canvas with black paint.

The author (Migs?) must have a fairly boring instagram feed if this is what's popping up in it. As Pedros says, unlikely to last too long, the article fails to mention rice but I can't imagine there are too many tossers out there going to slog it up to CC Bridge to paint and drink enough to make it sustainable. In addition there are plenty of "drink and draw" options already, showbox, the cloud etc. if that's your thing and a lot less wanky.

I'd personally rather sip paint but each to their own :pissed:

Nope, wasn't me that wrote it (I would have at least mentioned the wine and prices), just posted it. A user actually sent it in to post, and it seemed interesting enough to me -- another option for something to do around town, as people are always asking what else there is to do than sit drinking 50 cent beers on the riverfront.

Fuck.

Peak Western though - so that’s something. A ‘highwater mark’ of sorts before the inevitable Chinese takeover turns the place into Lanzhou.

Drink and draws have been happening here for a few years. Wouldn't expect a place dedicated to only that succeed long term, but there's board game cafes, learn to paint/crochet/make your own lino cut portrait of your cat and various other community things that seem to power on regardless of the opinions of internet forums.

I don't know much about art but that chick looks like she had her hair done and a make over just before she went.

Don't artists generally not wash for a week, live in complete squalor and cut their ears off?

Just my 2 cents.

Not a taxidermy one yet? Perhaps I have spotted a gap in the market. Free supplies as well what with all the cats around the temples.

Who’s in?

That model is a bit dated. Here's a more current example. This guy made his money on the stock market and now employs a huge team to create his artworks. He recently "gifted" this wonderful piece to the Musée d'Art Moderne, which as you all know is in the Pompidou Center.

Image

Funny that it is considered a "gift", when you read the following:

Private donors financed the sculpture’s €3m (£2.6m) price tag, but taxpayers are on the hook for work required to reinforce the ground supporting the bronze, stainless steel and aluminium sculpture, the text says.

Anyway, the Art Bar article was alright, I'm sure that a painting class would appeal to some people. I'm fine with watercolor and gouache but I've never really used oils so wouldn't mind a few tips. My mum is a pretty good oil painter but I was never allowed to touch anything in her studio, if I was even allowed in. 8-)
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Why have they all got the same thing on their easels? Is it just a colouring in thing like for primary school kids?
