Hello, everyone.
I will travel in August during the wet season. I want to catch a bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap or Sihanoukville or Kampot as it is a lot cheaper than flying. However, I am very worried about flooding and am concerned I cannot travel by bus out of PP to the main tourist destinations. How are the road conditions during that time of year between the major towns/cities?

Major highways connect major tourist destinations, you can travel without problems 12 months of the year.
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

The driver of a double-decker coach that crashed in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Wang Nam Khieo district on Wednesday night resulting in 18 deaths and 32 injuries, has been hit with three serious charges.
Police have charged chartered-bus driver Krissana Juthacheun, 44, with reckless driving causing death and injuries, failing to stop to provide aid to injured passengers and having narcotic substances in his body while driving.
Krissana reportedly fled the scene right after the crash. He tested positive for drug use and confessed to having taken yaba pills during the 50-strong tour group’s trip on Monday and Tuesday to Chanthaburi, said Provincial Police Region 3 chief Pol Lt-General Damrongsak Kittiprapat. The group was returning to Kalasin at the time of the Wednesday crash

You’ll be fine. Two points of recommendation:
1) Avoid traveling at night, which is valid advice all year around, especially during rainy season.
2) To be extra safe, make sure you take a reputable bus company, such as Giant Ibis, that rotate drivers to avoid drowsiness and generally just provide a more comfortable experience.

The wet season generally just means a torrential shower once or twice a day. The rest of the day it's usually sunny. The flooding can be an issue in some areas, but you're unlikely to have too many problems on the main routes as they are mostly above flood level. Kampot's river can burst its bank sometimes. I've never seen that in Phnom Penh but it got close a few years back. Most of the country is an alluvial plain and the yearly cycles of flood and drought are something people just get used to. During the wet season most cities are cut off from each other and passengers de bus in the outskirts of Phnom Penh and use coracles to complete their journeys.

Best time to travel. Everything is green, there are less tourists, prices for services come down.

Not to say, far less dusty & much cleaner air. I personally prefer the rainy season.Hanno wrote:Best time to travel. Everything is green, there are less tourists, prices for services come down.
I’m another pro-rainy season. Not just for Cambodia based trips either
