White people and Cambodian animals

Postby pedros » Thu Apr 19, 2018 7:52 pm

It's getting worse. Today I've seen pleas for a 'dog wheel chair' for some poor crippled puppy that's been dragging it's arse around like a spacker for 7 months (although the accompanying video gave me a sick chuckle), an appeal for funds to treat the most mange ridden and sore covered mutt found on Otres (but he had a collar, someone must have loved him!) and a couple of 'we found these adorable kittens dumped on our doorstep' posts on that social media.

This is a typical day, for every 'poor dog/cat sob story' I see, dozens more must luckily pass me by.

Now I'm not an animal hater, but pragmatic when it comes to an animal suffering (brick it or drown it, being the best solution). Or at least ask a local to 'take it away to live on a nice farm somewhere'.

Save a dog, very noble and forming a life bond is great, but a little difficult to afford initially, then financially ruinous when it's time to leave and you want to take Polo back to Kansas or wherever.

The world's gone mad.... Yesterday I found some abandoned kittens....

The world's gone mad? Something odd to you about people showing some pity for struggling animals and trying to do something humane about their plight? Good on 'em.

I like animals as much as anyone but it's pathetic how much these bleeding-hearts care for mange-ridden stray domestic animals while not even bothering to notice the suffering poor, or the wildlife that gets mangled by these creatures. These myopic idiots who come over here and feel sorry for a kitten or puppy and then "realize" that they are only spending a short period here and have to abandon the animal when leaving. If you aren't in it for the long run, don't be a selfish idiot and adopt an animal that needs 10-15 years of care.

I don't like cats. They come across as cold narcissistic creatures. Blowing up cats in the KOW sounds almost fun.

Not as much fun as watching a few people retaliate in kind toward you and those like you that would blow up a cat or any other animal.

So if someone isn't willing to completely disrupt their life and take on the responsibility of providing permanent, full time care and support then you are a "selfish idiot" and what fool you for doing anything at all? Don't quite get your logic there but whateva.

I didn't mean that, and I'm sure you knew that. I meant that you shouldn't take on a responsibility at a whim when you are aware that you may not be staying the course. If you can find a good home for the animal before you leave that might make you feel better, good luck with that.

Similar to these orphanage tourism things.
There’s studies that show the children are damaged by such short term bonding. Have you seen how eager the kids are to hug you?

Lol - here's my tale of Cambodia and cats:

I moved here 5 years ago, after banging around the world for the previous half dozen. I love animals, and once I had determined that Cambodia was a place where I could live out my life, I decided to get a cat. I paid a street urchin $10 to catnap one from the monks, and, happy day, I had a buddy. Gray tabby, big green eyes, no tail. I named her Q. I knew there was a chance that someday I'd have to move, so I checked with a pet moving service. From here to Europe or the US would cost around $3500. Ok, if needs be, I could manage the cost. All was well, we were happy.

A year later, I was in a Riverside pizza shop; heard a plaintive, wrenching cry from behind the door, which I ignored. Abandoned kitten. As I headed out the door after finishing my business there, it cried out again. Well, I looked behind the door. Two cats now. I named him Blur. Moving was now up to 7K, should it come to that. Ok again. So we 3 got used to each other and life was good.

A year later, we moved to the southern side of PP. Nice apartment, a second bedroom for the 2 to play in, top floor. Maybe a month later, a kitten started showing up at the door, mewing. I put out food and water, inquired with the landlord about the cat. He said it lived on the roof; abandoned by the owner. One day I let the cat come inside. He spotted the indoor plumbing, tried it out - ahh! He decided to stay. I named him Romeo. And if 'we had to move? Well, I'd be one poor ex expat, but they're my family. My life would be much, much poorer without them.

So there be my tale. Make of it what you may.

Whilst a man owning cats 'as family' has a whiff of the yellow hanky about it, there's nothing wrong with that story. I've got more animals than everyone here put together (should see my in-laws), but it's the well meaning but totally naive (IMO) idea that raising funds for Toto will do anything more than a) prolong his suffering or b) give oneself a feel good glow for a year or 2 before dumping him back on the street after a year or 2 when it's time to go home. Despite appeals to find a new owner on social media.

Yellow hanky - that's a new one. I guess I know what you mean. Well, anyway, I'm 67, been married and divorced twice, and am now at the happy point in my life where I just don't give a shit what any person thinks of me - good, bad, indifferent, or whatever. Sex, with all its innuendo, quirks, fetishes, holds no attraction for me. To each his own. I don't much care for people, but I love my cats.
