Crater Lake purchased?

Postby priver » Wed May 16, 2018 6:59 pm

I just come back from a trip to Banlung and was told by two different people (1 Cambodian and 1 French) that the Crater Lake area had been purchased by a Chinese company. I find it hard to believe, as this is a protected area. Anyone heard anything about this? Or is it just a local rumor?

Well, the fact that it's a protected area/ national park doesn't seem to matter much as plenty of economic concessions and developments have been approved in national parks over the past decade or so. Preah Monivong National Park (where Bokor is) has seen a huge amount of development, as has Ream National Park for example. However, this sounds like an ill-informed rumor, much like the one about "Angkor Wat being sold to the Vietnamese" was. The truth was that a Cambodian company owned by Sok Kong, who was born in Cambodia but has ethnic Vietnamese ancestry, ran the ticket concession for a couple of decades. So it's possible that a Chinese company has bought some some concession to set up an eco-resort  or run the ticketing or even set up a mine or plantation. They have not "purchased" the crater, at most they have bought a lease on part of it.

Even so, if even partly true it's shameful. Isn't Cambodia developed enough that it can run its own tourist sites?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Running their own tourist sites would involve them investing (risking) their own money and actually having to work hard. Much better to take the quick buck from the Chinks and go back to the local KTV for more Johnny Gold and pre-peeled mango slices.
